Better THAN you think!

Hi all, this is my first post on the BDB and I have decided I would write about something I know about… Lunch in West Seattle.

I have been plundering the restaurants of West Seattle since the early 90’s and I loves the lunch! In my posts I am going to be your amateur review dood, I am reviewing Lunch only, even though in WS the lunch and the Din Din are often the same… BUT THIS IS THE LUNCHBOX! I take into account the two most important Lunch elements, Taste and $. The atmosphere… maybe a little, Service… maybe—– ITS LUNCH! food and $ thats what matters. I am Single and I work at home so as you can imagine, lunch is the great escape! So here we GO. THAN BROTHER’S PHO This place has become a favorite! One word……. Simple,Simple,Simple Oh’ and very tasty! (one word three times and an emotion).  They have pho and thats it, although it comes in several models… Veggie, Chicken, Meatball and many varieties of beef. The other great thing is that you would have to try hard to spend $10 per person… I find that the small or the Medium is more than enough and both are less than $5… now that kicks $#%. They dont skimp on the basil and shoots either! In an effort to kick it up a notch, you also get a cream filled puff pastry? THAN BROTHERS gets 3 and a half LUNCHBOXES out of 5, I don’t know if their is a five so thats good! So thats my first go around:)

If you think I am correct please send your love letters, if not feel free to shred me! OUCH! Till next time… DON’T FORGET YOUR LUNCH

With West Seattle’s Farmers Market and Seattle Fish Company…who needs Pike Place Market?

Okay, we still need and love Pike Place Market.   Last Sunday, we thought we would have time to venture out of West Seattle to Pike Place to pick up some fresh oysters and other goodies for dinner.   We ran out of day!   And after checking out the goods at the Farmers Market and Seattle Fish Company…we decided to stay in the ‘hood!  Img_5274 Img_5275

The Seattle Fish Company not only has a huge selection of fresh seafood, they also have wines with pairing suggestions (very handy) and some groceries as well.   Our oysters, which were fabulous on the grill, came with a free lemon!

This guy is waiting for his pizza…

Dsc_0062

It’s funny…one of the post BDB has received most comments on from readers is about pizza preferences.   This will be my first time trying Garlic Jims.   I have ordered the Chicken BBQ for my son…and since I’m trying to shed a few pounds (I tried to talk him out of pizza tonight, and being the sap of a mom I am), I ordered the spinach artichoke with thin crust.    What pushed us over was Isaac’s comment on the original post.   Isaac, we’re counting on you!

This heron sat on a neighbors fence for hours this morning.   Maybe my neighbors eat small fish for breakfast and the heron was waiting for some leftovers?  He never changed position much.   I’d check every once in while between phone calls and emails (work).    It was a nice amusing break in my day.

Update:  My son like’s the pizza, his first word was "Wow" and then… that he thinks the thick crust is too thick.   Since I’m just starting a diet…I’m too crabby to talk about food.  It was pretty good.  Lots of garlic (I picked my cloves off).

Pizza Preferences

Garlicjims_3 I was contemplating ordering pizza from Garlic Jim’s tonight when my son protested wanting to stick with our ol’ favorite standby, Pagliacci Pizza.

Since my son was hankering for Pagliacci, I never discovered…Pagliacci

  1. If Garlic Jim’s delivers?  And if so…to Beach Drive.
  2. If their pizza is anywhere near as good as Pagliacci’s.

Pagliacci not only delivered my pizza and salad on time…it was free (and delish)!  It must be since we have three teens who consume a ton of pizza from Pagliacci.

Who is your pizza preference?

Beach Drive’s Little Italy – La Rustica Restaurant

Img_4952_2

If you don’t feel like fighting for a table at Beach Drive’s only restaurant, La Rustica, order to go! The other night we enjoyed Lamb Shank, Spaghetti, Salad, Cannelloni, and their famous bread in our living room. We saved the pizza for later!

In usual La Rustica style, everything was fantastic. We think the  balsamic braised Lamb Shank is one of the best things one can eat in West Seattle. Maybe you have smelled it cooking while on an evening walk?  FYI, the order taker said 25 minutes but it turned out to be an hour.

And the Grande Goes to…

Weather and schedules permitting, my neighbor and I get up in the wee hours for a Img_4956morning walk to a coffee shop.  Only two on Alki are open that early on our route and they happen to be "major chains".  After a mile of bravely walking along Beach Drive to Alki past the speeding morning dare devil drivers who’s only concern is for punching the clock and little towards your safety, we feel pretty proud and perky (could it just be the frigid temperatures?) by the time we reach our half way point and reward for our journey.  Here’s how our walking adventure began last summer….

Day 1.  On the first morning, we witnessed on such speeding morning driver wipe out someone’s cat on Alki in front of "Big Brand Coffee".    They didn’t even slow down or stop.    My neighbor, who’s alias on BDB is Cat Woman, and I were mortified as she tried to save the poor pet.   There was nothing we could do.   We went inside and notified who appeared to be the manager and who honestly did not seem to care.  A police officer went outside to put the body in a plastic bag and left it by the telephone pole in front of the coffee shop.   Cat Woman and I assumed that animal control had been called since the Police Officer informed the manager the animal was in front of their establishment.

Day 2.   In front of Emma Schmitz View Point, we see a dead otter in the street.  Dare Devil Driver strikes again.  This was nearly the end of our morning walks.    We reach our half way point prize of a hot latte disheartened to see the white body bag of the cat is still in front of the coffee shop.   We talk to the same stone faced manager and we ask if she’ll call Animal Control.  She nods and pushes our coffee to us.  We notice she warms right up to a few other clients who appear to be "regulars".    Grant it, we (at least I) are probably quite a sight in the morning with our fleece hats and layers of clothes…we’re certainly not dolled up as we’re dressed with only warmth in mind.

Day 3.   The dead cat in the bag is still there.   Did I mention this is summer time and we were having 80 degree days?   Cat Woman and I are appalled.   We go into the coffee shop and address the manager again who claims she did call Animal Control.   She pushes our beverages towards us and warmly greats her next client.    We’re in disbelief.   That day I call Animal Control and guess what,  no report was ever filed.  In fact, you cannot file a report over the phone, it must be done on the web.   Good news though…on our third day of walking, we did not witness any road kill.

Day 4.   We decide we’ve had enough coffee served with the cup of attitude and walked a whole block and a half further to Tully’s on Alki.    I don’t know what they’re serving in the employee cooler but everyone there is happy!   They have welcomed us in the morning with warm smiles just about every day.

We have never turned back.   Tully’s is our preferred double tall vendor.    In fact, I purchase gift cards to send to my clients when they celebrate birthdays and I now go there to buy them instead of "big brand coffee".     We figure at $7.00 a day (I’ll estimate 4 days a week since we don’t do weekends and weather might cause us to retreat); our business is worth approx. $1400 a year (not factoring in the gift cards I buy, which add up to another $500 easy).    A little shot of attitude (good or bad) adds up!

We tip our cups to Tully’s for outstanding service with a smile…word is they’re going public.    Cheers!

Side note:  I’m sure there are many pleasant wonderful people who work for both major coffee chains.   This is just our experience from last summer.   I have added two categories:  reviews and opinions for Beach Drive Blog.

Yummy Bakery Nouveau

I’m very pleased to introduce, Natalie.  This is her first contribution to Beach Drive Blog.

We are fortunate to have a new,  authentic French bakery up on the hill called Bakery Nouveau!  Chocolate, Pastry & Bread!!  David & I tried the ham & cheese baguette, turkey & havarti croissant, pepperoni pizza and a brownie. Everything was delicious and my next trip will be for some brioche.  If you are looking to wow someone on Easter, they have beautiful handmade chocolate Easter eggs filled with chocolates.  Although I was sad to see Borracchini’s leave, the treats at Bakery Nouveau are just what us West Siders needed!
