Go Away, Gale! Gale Watch and Wind Advisory for Christmas Eve

I’m beginning to feel like “Gale” is an unwelcomed guest lately who keeps showing up uninvited.  We never know for certain what time or how long she’ll stay or what type of damage she may cause. 😅

All joking aside, we currently have a Gale Watch and Wind Advisory set for tomorrow. The European and the American models tell two different stories with their forecast and, of course, the weather forecast can change at any time.

This is what we have now.

Wind Alert, which is a blended forecast weighted with NAM (American model) is showing GUSTS OF 60 around 4:00 pm on Wednesday.

Alki West Seattle weather

The European model shows gusts closer to the upper 20s.

This is a screenshot from another ap that I use on my phone, Windy. The European model is on the left and the North American is on the right. Two very different forecasts for tomorrow.

This graphic is from NOAA which shows the current forecasted range in wind for Seattle, tomorrow at 1:00 pm ranges from 12 mph to 67 mph.

High tide on Wednesday, December 24, 2025 is a 12.34 feet at 8:27 am. Thankfully, tides will be lower when/if the forecasted winds arrive.

Last but not least, the Special Weather Statement:

…HEAVY RAINFALL DURING THE LAST WEEK INCLUDING TODAY WILL LEAD TO AN INCREASED THREAT OF LANDSLIDES IN WESTERN WASHINGTON…

Issued by NWS Seattle WA

Rainfall from the past week has increased soil moisture to high
levels across western Washington. Additional rainfall of of one to
three inches is expected with the system today into Wednesday
morning. This amount of rain will continue to put extra pressure on
soil instability, leading to an increased threat of landslides and
debris flows, especially from recent burned areas. This rain event
could act as a trigger for new landslides.

Areas most susceptible to landslides debris flows under these
conditions are steep coastal bluffs, other steep hillsides or
road cuts, and recent burned areas. A diminishing threat of
landslides and debris flows will continue for several days after
the rain ends.

Wind Advisory and Plenty of Rain

There is a Wind Advisory in effect starting tonight at 8pm through 8pm Wednesday. Wind Alert‘s forecast seems to align with the advisory with the hot pink streak showing potential gusts in the 40’s.

If this forecast holds true, then we could see some water coming over with tomorrow’s high tide of 12.29 feet around 9:49 am with forecasted gusts of 42 from the southwest.

Of course, this all just a forecast and who knows what Mother Nature will have in store.

Stay safe neighbors!

Wind Advisory starting 2pm Tuesday

We could be set for some very windy weather starting tomorrow afternoon due to the bomb cyclone setting up in the Pacific. This snapshot from WindAlert shows possible gusts off Alki Point of up to 49 mph around 7pm. Typically, this would be a “barking dog” report for us except the wind is coming from the southeast instead of the southwest. The waves during this event should be heading away from our west-facing seawalls and beaches.

Although you may not have waves coming over during this potentially high wind event, we could see trees impacted. We lost a large chunk of our corkscrew willow from an easterly wind event a couple of years ago. We could also see power outages.

The National Weather Service issued a Wind Advisory this afternoon:

1241 PM PST Mon Nov 18 2024

...WIND ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 2 PM TUESDAY TO 4 AM PST WEDNESDAY...

* WHAT...East to southeast winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50
  mph expected.

* WHERE...Portions of northwest and west central Washington.

* WHEN...From 2 PM Tuesday to 4 AM PST Wednesday.

* IMPACTS...Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree
limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Strongest winds will occur Tuesday evening
into early Wednesday morning. Significant impacts may occur at
lower-than-usual wind speeds due to the atypical easterly wind
  direction.

We do have some high tides, which should be spectacular to watch during this storm.

Get your candles and flashlights ready!
