Learn at the Log House Museum

Tuesday, June 2nd at 7 p.m. at the Log House Museum, Joan Hockaday talks on "The Olmsted Legacy in West Seattle" from her new book, Greenscapes,  Olmsted's Pacific Northwest (WSU Press 2009).  Hockaday is a gardener historian who researched the Schmitz family and West Seattle connection in the archives of the Log House Museum.  Frederick Law Olmsted traveled to Seattle to design the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition and offered his advice to the Parks Board, including Federdinand Schmitz.

Event is free but donations are always gratefully accepted.

Pull in Those Recycle Bins

Our family wasn't alone with putting our recycle bins our for pick up yesterday.  Many P3310023 of us still have our bins out on Beach Drive "just in case".

A quick check on Seattle Public Utilities website reveals that our next recycle pick up is next week, April 6 (at least for our section of Beach Drive).   You can determine what's picked up when by entering your address here.

Our house did not receive any of the new compact cans–which I think is what threw us off a bit.  I've noticed that some containers along Beach Drive appear to have new stickers on top of their old cans (we don't).

If we keep our current yard waste bin, we'll wind up paying plenty for it (it's now a food waste bin, too)… here's how to change your garbage can sizes.

Our old 64 gallon  garbage container costs $44.90 per month–the cute new green garbage "micro-cans" are under $20.00 per month.   Garbage rates are here.

If you're now using a big old yard waste 96 gallon container as your new "food and yard waste" container, the cost is $6.90 per month.    Check out rates here.

A Whole Lot of Shakin’ (or Rattling) Going On

Just south of Jacobsen on Beach Drive, the road is being jack-hammerred in order to repair a pipeline from a home.  I'm told the work should be complete today.

Beach Drive Neighbors in “the News”

Kind of a stretch to call this news…but…at Beach Drive Blog, a “slow news” day is happily the norm.  The Seattle PI recently addressed the removal of mailboxes in Seattle that are receiving less than 25 pieces of mail a day…yours truly along with other neighbors were quoted here.

Regardless of our feelings, the mailbox at Beach Drive and Jacobsen is gone.   The USPS states this is cost-saving move:

“Fewer boxes mean fewer gas-guzzling trips to pick up the mail and fewer carriers to empty the boxes.”

It seems to me that the mail carriers who currently service our neighborhood could have easily stopped by to pick up “less than 25 pieces of mail” each day eliminating the other mail carrier that serviced that mail box.

Could be time to invest in a locking mail box, if you don’t have one all ready.

UPSP also needs to update their website with where the nearest collection boxes are.

It’s Beach Drive Blogs 2nd Anniversary

Our first post started with this post and it's interesting to see what has changed and what has not.  I would still love to have other contributors from around the Beach Drive neighborhood.  We're located smack dab in the middle and to have folks reporting from the north and south ends would be very helpful.

Beach Drive Blog mark's it's 2nd birthday with 775 posts!

I would like to thank our readers, those of you who contribute via writing articles or emailing tips and by participating with your comments.   Thank you all!

Say Good Bye to the Mail Box at Jacobsen and Beach Drive

Jan10 026According to this notice, the mail box at Jacobsen and will be removed during the week of January 19, 2009 due to "insufficient volume".

For more information, contact the Supervisor of Delivery and Collection at (206) 768-4368.

Oh Christmas Tree…Oh Christmas Tree…

When will Seattle Public Utilities pick up your Christmas tree?  According to West Seattle Blog and SPU website, not until your next scheduled yard waste pick up.  I cannot remember the last time my yard waste was removed (which is also packed full of allowed food).

Tomorrow, we're scheduled for recycle to be picked up.  Yard waste will not be picked up at our home for another week.

To search your address to see whether or not you have yard waste and can toss your tree to the curb, click here.

Barking Dog Report: Gale Winds and High Waves

Looks like we'll be wrapping up 2008 with a real blast from Mother Nature.  Based on Istock_000002610704medium_1all the reports I'm checking out now…I'm issuing a "Barking Dog Report".  If this is your first time hearing this term from BDB, my husband fondly refers to me as a "barking dog" when I'm anxious, especially if I think there's a chance that we may have water coming over our bulkhead.  If we are preparing for this type of event, if I have time, I publish a "Barking Dog Report" on Beach Drive Blog.   I rely on websites I have below under "Swell Links" on the left side of this blog.

The City of Seattlesite has is a "WIND ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 6PM THIS EVENING TO 7AM PST WEDNESDAY…TONIGHT…WINDY…RAIN…LOWS IN THE 30S.  SOUTH WIND 15 TO 20 MPH INCREASING TO 25 TO 35 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 45 MPH AFTER MIDNIGHT."

The Puget Sound Marine Forecast has a "GALE WARNING IN EFFECT…TONIGHT…S WIND 20 TO 25 KT RISING TO 35 KT AFTER MIDNIGHT…THEN BECOMING SW LATE.  WIND WAVES 3 OR 4 BUILDING TO 4 TO 6 FT.  RAIN TURNING TO SHOWERS AFTER MIDNIGHT.

WED…SW WIND 15 TO 25 KT.  WIND WAVES 2 TO 4 FT.  SHOWERS.   WED NIGHT…SW WINDS 10 TO 15 KT…BECOMING S AFTER MIDNIGHT. WIND WAVES 1 OR 2 FT.

Factor in our area tide schedule for the remainder of today and tomorrow:

At 5:43 pm today (just before Seattle's wind advisory), West Seattle tides are at the second high tide of the day at 9.4 feet.   Tides retreat to a -0.7 feet at 12:37 am on Wednesday and then up to 12.3 feet at 7:58 am (just after the wind advisory is currently reported as being over).

Garbage to be picked up tomorrow…maybe?

West Seattle Blog just posted a detailed update: please click here to read it.   According to WSB, don't bother with yard waste and…there is a chance that some of us Monday customers may not get our weeks of trash picked up tomorrow.  SPU appreciates our patience.
