UPDATED: Meeting regarding the Murray Pump Station at Lowman Beach

Update April 23, 2010:  Read West Seattle Blog's coverage of the meeting here.   Be sure to read the comments which also contain a great deal of information.

Tonight at 7pm at the Morgan Community Association's quarterly meeting, the controversial discussion regarding Murray Pump Station continues.   West Seattle Blog has an update here. The meeting takes place in the basement of The Kenney at 7125 Fauntleroy Way SW, Seattle.

Some options to deal with the "combined sewer overflow" include:

  • digging up a majority of Lowman Beach Park
  • claiming some Beach Drive homes across from the park (via eminet domain)

Dr. Ron Sterling, author of West Seattle Sound Angels blog, states this is

"…the only meeting I am aware of that is scheduled to take place BEFORE King County submits it's plans for SEPA (State Environmental Policy Act) approval in June 2010…. Be there if you care!"

Celebrate Earth Day at Lincoln Park

Earthday

Today from 11:00 am - 2:00 pm, you can join the Seattle Parks Department in celebrating Earth Day by cleaning up the beach area at Lincoln Park.    As the sign posted on the telephone pole says, bring a picnic and meet at Shelter #5 by the beach where you'll be joined by Camp Long staff.

The Future of Lowman Beach Park

LowmanBeachPark The West Seattle Blog has a must read article about what the county is proposing to do with the Lowman Beach with regards to the pumps, including:

….digging up most of Lowman Beach Park, including its unique beachfront tennis court and two century-old trees. Another would involve acquiring homes across the street from Lowman, through eminent domain if necessary.

It's a stinky situation and if you care about this area of West Seattle, I encourage to read WSB's post:  Turn Lowman Beach into a utility site?  Overflow options draw ire

Wanted: YOU

Beach Drive Blog is looking for needs neighborhood writers and photographers.   I've been passionately plugging away at the blog for almost three years (we actually have a "blogoversary coming up soon) but with all the changes in my "full time job", I've been running out of day to give BDB the time and attention it so deserves.

This is where Beach Drive Blog could use your help.  If you live in the Beach Drive Neighborhood of West Seattle and would like to be a contributor, please let me know.   It would be great to have "reporters" covering the entire stretch of Beach Drive with articles you've written or your photographs.

If you're interested or have any questions, please let me know and I'll fill you in on the details.   The more contributors we have at BDB, the more vibrant and rich this blog will be for our community.

House Fire around 4200 Beach Drive

I just learned about this via West Seattle Blog on Facebook.   A home at 4200 Beach Drive caught fire.  According to WSB,  "Beach Drive is blocked off from La Rustica to Me Kwa Mooks because of the callout" and Metro route 37 may be impacted.

Read more here from West Seattle Blog.

Update 8:00 a.m.:   By the time I reached the home, the fire was put out and the road was still blocked beginning at the north point of Mee Kwa Mooks.  Thankfully this is a home that was not yet occupied (home with angular roof).

WSB reports that "one firefighter suffered an arm injury and had to go to the hospital".

The brick red house below is the property that caught fire.   Neighbors report they smelled smoke around 5:00 a.m. this morning.

Update 10:30 am:  via West Seattle Blog's Twitter that the fire has been ruled accidental with $250,000 in damages.

Meeting Tonight about our Beaches

West Seattle Blog reports there is a meeting tonight, October 8, 2009 from 6:30 – 8:00 at The Hall at Fauntleroy about our local beaches.   This is open to the public and you're welcome to drop by.  Read West Seattle Blog's post for more information.

Making It Street Legal

This '65 Chevy which drew extra attention when the owner did not return in time to move his hot rod off the street after the show closed at 4:00 pm today.   The SPD tried opening the street, however with one late closed and all the "looky-loo's", the street was closed again.

A quick phone call to West Seattle Blog put me in contact with one of the shows organizers.

With the owner no where in sight, a group helped the organizer roll the hot rod back onto the street (to hopefully prevent it from being towed).

We were late to the car show since it we were celebrating our daughters 18th birthday.   You can see a few of the photos that I was able to take by clicking here.

Gagging Dog Report – P U!

Typically I'll do a "Barking Dog Report" to alert neighbors of potential flooding during a storm.  However this morning, we have to ask "ooh, what's that smell?"

We have shut all our windows with hopes that the tide coming in will hurry and wash away the stench of what must be hot, musty kelp and critters.

I was blaming it on my husband and the dog earlier…but even they can't take credit for this smell.

And now… some Skynyrd with "That Smell"
