Earth Art

Dsc_0349_1Along Mee Kwa Mooks Park this morning, my neighbor and I discovered this mysterious earth art that begins at the park bench and travels to the Puget Sound.

Dsc_0350The artist must have gathered his materials from across Mee Kwa Mooks where the mud and earth pile from the December storm remains.

Dsc_0357 Later this morning, another neighbor informed me that a teen worked on this creation a few days ago.   I wish I had their energy!

Dsc_0356Perhaps the young artist was inspired by Day Light Saving Time being earlier this year on March 11, 2007 or maybe it was a touch of Spring fever?

Who knows….kuddos to the kiddo!   What a fun way to start Valentine’s Day.

Beach Drive’s Newest Resident

JP Patches and Gertrude

The Log House Museum Needs YOU!

I have been contacted by some of the fine folks at The Log House Museum.   They are looking for volunteers for greeters/docents, gift shop clerks, data processing/office workers, gardeners and especially techies to revamp their website.   During the summer, they hope to recruit teens and older to do storytelling along the beach about early settlers and Native Americans.     It’s a great place to visit to learn more about the history of West Seattle and our community.

Do you have a little extra time?  Please contact Andrea Mercado at 206-938-5293.

Don’t Miss the Boat…or Explorer West’s Auction

Explorer West will be holding their 7th annual dinner and auction on the evening Mcj038258900001_1 of March 17th at the Jerry Brockey Student Center at South Seattle Community College.

This year’s theme is “All Aboard the S.S. Explorer West!”  I can’t even imagine what the talented folks at Explorer West are dreaming up for this adventure.  Last year, the auction’s theme evolved around Paris.   When you entered the room, you were greeted by a 30 foot tall Eiffel Tower (including the light show) and felt as though you had stepped into a street side bistro.   I’ve gone to several school auctions in my lifetime, this one amazed me.  The school is still procuring items for the auction as well.  If you would like to attend this event and/or donate the the auction to support the only independent private middle school in West Seattle, please contact Kathleen at Explorer West.

Morning Moonshine

Did you catch the moon setting over the Olympics this morning?  Speaking of moonshine…I wonder how many Beach Drive homes have prohibtion cellars.   Could make for some interesting blogging!

Calling All Patches Pals!

Jp_pg_01_2JP Patches does not live on Beach Drive.  However, he IS a Seattle treasure and in less than 10 days, he will receive a huge honor.

A few Patches Pals at the Northwest Academy of Television Arts and Science are raising money to build a statue in recognition of JP and, his long time friend, Gertrude’s 50 years in Seattle.

Last year, JP was featured in an article in the Seattle Times on why he is so worthy of the statue.

I have been staying in contact with NATAS in order to keep tabs on the fundraising progress (did I mention a Patches Pal?).    I am so pleased to announce that on Saturday, February 10, 2007 at the Red Door Ale House in Fremont, JP and friends will be unveiling the scale model of the statue and the website where people can visit to donate or purchase Patches Pavers (i.e.–buy a brick).  I actually suggested selling "patches" similar to JP’s old carpet at the City Dump back in June to NATAS–so I’m absolutely tickled that this is what they are doing as part of the fundraiser.

All Patches Pals are invited to this event–spread the word!

Poor Air Quality Creates Beautiful Sunsets

Dsc_0251 Who needs words with pictures like this.  This week, we have enjoyed phenomenal sunsets.  And did you see the golden moon this morning?  Simply breathtaking.

The Official BHS Club

OrsonYou’ll have to ask John (Tootsy’s pet) what it means!  Every morning, afternoon and evening my old Pug takes me for a walk.  There is no walking him.  He pulls me where he wants to go and stops where he wants to stop.   That 20 pound body has amazing strength and determination.    During these walks, we say hello to the usual characters.

Gizmo, the toughy in the club, will give a ferocious bark to scare you off (hopefully before you see his cute self).   Oliver is very cordial.  And Tootsy is a spitfire.   And I cannot forget Rosie.  She just wants to say hello to everyone!  (I wish I had pictures of all of them…to show you).    Orson, my dog, is getting up in years and he either wants to say hello to all or would rather just pass on by and get to business.

This morning, we all just happened to meet at the same time and it’s always fun.   Catching up on the latest storm and whatever else might be going on in the neighborhood…of course, I told all of the dog’s pets about the Beach Drive Blog.    And…I let them know that we are looking for other contributors and authors to this blog….hint hint.

A Lovely Day for a Walk

Img_4751_2

It was such a day out that my husband and I decided to walk to the Log House Museum on Alki.    So I thought I would share some photos I took along the way.    At the Museum, a volunteer was asking if we are residents and we told him where we live and that we just started a blog on our area.   He wanted to know if I knew the identity of the West Seattle blogger!  Maybe he is the person behind the West Seattle Blog?!   Mysteries are so much fun!

The fine folks at the museum also informed us about the Alki News Beacon, a local Img_4752publication that I was not aware of.

On the way back, we toured Seaview Hall which was recently listed for a cool $1.8 million.   It’s amazing how much restoration has been done to this historic home.  Personally, I think it would make a great bed and breakfast if you have a spare mil or two!
