Living with a Historic Home

SeaviewLast month there was an interesting article in the Seattle PI regarding historic homes in Seattle.  It touches on the Hainsworth House and Seaview Hall both currently for sale in West Seattle.  It also discusses things to consider if you’re thinking about applying for landmark status for your home.  To read more…click here.

Neighbor Directory

Sandi suggested that we have our neighborhood contact info on Beach Drive Blog so that we can reach each other in the event of an emergency or for neighborly events.

We have Beach Drive Neighbors on the blog (left column) which allows me to input the following information (this is the "back side" of the blog that is not seen by the public):

Beachdriveneighbor If you would like to have your information listed, send me an email with your name, website, email, phone number and/or "one-line bio".   (I may eventually make this a separate link if we have enough neighbors listed).

Thanks, Sandi!

Update (2/6/07 10:15 a.m.):  After tinkering around with Typepad, I see that I need to build a different format for a neighborhood directory.    Unless you have a website, the template I’m currently using will not show your information.  I also would prefer to have a link that takes us to the neighbor instead of listing everyone down the side of the page.    Please do send me your information and I’ll work on the new format.

Update (2/6/07 10:49 a.m.)  I have created a new page for our neighbor directory.  If you would like to be listed please contact me.  I’m not sure how much information you would like to have on the world wide web (most everything is all ready public)?  If you have a blog or would like to promote your business AND you are a Beach Drive resident, we can do that too!

Do You Have Plans for Dinner Tonight?

A neighbor just called to let us know that The Homestead Restaurant features a community night on the first Friday Monday of each month from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.  They offer specially pricing on dinners and according to Larry, it’s a nice way to meet your neighbors.

Unfortunately for us, I had all ready made stuffed peppers for dinner.   Maybe next time!   I’ve been itching to try their famous fried chicken.

So Far So Good!

Istock_000001953833small_1Beach Drive Blog, in it’s infancy, is doing great!  We all ready have many of subscribers (see the email box on the left) who have signed up to receive updates automatically in their email when a new post is created.

I’ve been receiving very positive feed back from neighbors and some ideas on how else this blog can be used.  I thought I should share a few ideas with you!

Here is a short list of possible subjects for Beach Drive Blog.

  • Garage Sales
  • Beach Drive Pets
  • Gardening Tips (I think this winter killed almost all of my potted plants)
  • Homes for sale in the neighborhood
  • Announcements (ex. birth, wedding, etc.)
  • Block watch information
  • Neighborhood stories (we live in an older home with a lot of interesting tales)
  • Other blogs to link to from Beach Drive

Are you a Beach Drive neighbor who would like to create a post for this blog?  We welcome your participation and ideas!   The more people who dig in and get involved with this blog, the more interesting it will be…you’ll tire of my ramblings!

Also, if you’re a neighbor who would like to be listed with a link to you or your profession on this blog–speak up and send me an email

Hummer’s on Beach Drive

Dec_29_007My neighbor, Suzanne, has me hooked on Hummer’s…. hummingbirds that is!  She informed of the importance of keeping their feeders full of fresh simple sugar water  and to change the water 1-2 times per week. They have been so much fun to watch over the winter.  I’m guessing we have three hummingbirds that are visiting our three feeders in our yard.    They are very entertaining creatures!   They have an electric chirp, do not seem afraid of humans and are absolutely beautiful with their iridescent feathers.   They certainly add a nice bit of color over the winter months when my garden is looking a bit drab.

This photo is from our kitchen window.   West Seattle Nursery is where I’ve purchased my feeders.  They have a good selection of glass feeders.  I have a "fancy" glass blown one as well that I found at the Bellevue Art Fair last summer.   I’ve not seen any birds at that one so it’s just yard art!

This time of year, I believe it is Anna’s Hummingbird.   Later in Spring, Rufous Hummingbirds appear in the Pacific Northwest.

Good News Bad News

Feb42006a_3The International Panel on Climate Change released their report on global warming.  The "good news" is that they estimate by 2100 (93 years from now) the water levels will rise up to two feet…so you don’t need to sell your waterfront house just yet (tongue in cheek).    The bad news (just some of it) for our neighborhood is that it sounds like we can expect more of the wacky storms we’ve endured during 2006.

Better news for the east side of Beach Drive, by 2200, you may have waterfront property!  Sounds like we need to keep our generators tuned and crank radios ready.

Morning Moonshine

Did you catch the moon setting over the Olympics this morning?  Speaking of moonshine…I wonder how many Beach Drive homes have prohibtion cellars.   Could make for some interesting blogging!

Calling All Patches Pals!

Jp_pg_01_2JP Patches does not live on Beach Drive.  However, he IS a Seattle treasure and in less than 10 days, he will receive a huge honor.

A few Patches Pals at the Northwest Academy of Television Arts and Science are raising money to build a statue in recognition of JP and, his long time friend, Gertrude’s 50 years in Seattle.

Last year, JP was featured in an article in the Seattle Times on why he is so worthy of the statue.

I have been staying in contact with NATAS in order to keep tabs on the fundraising progress (did I mention a Patches Pal?).    I am so pleased to announce that on Saturday, February 10, 2007 at the Red Door Ale House in Fremont, JP and friends will be unveiling the scale model of the statue and the website where people can visit to donate or purchase Patches Pavers (i.e.–buy a brick).  I actually suggested selling "patches" similar to JP’s old carpet at the City Dump back in June to NATAS–so I’m absolutely tickled that this is what they are doing as part of the fundraiser.

All Patches Pals are invited to this event–spread the word!

The Painted Lady’s turn for Ink

Satterleehouse2don A friendly Beach Drive neighbor just pointed out this article published today in the Seattle PI regarding the Satterlee home.   To read the article, click here.

Should you decide to purchase this home, you can be Scott and Susan’s neighbor!

Poor Air Quality Creates Beautiful Sunsets
