Busy day in the Puget Sound off of Beach Drive

This morning, I spied this military ship cruising along…Dsc_0039

Right now (around 3:45) we have some Coast Guard activity.   I have no idea if it’s only a drill or what’s going on…I’m just camera ready!

New blog about West Seattle

Check it out:  West Seattle Mag, aka the West Seattle Herald compliments of Matthew Durham former Chief Photographer of the West Seattle Herald, is becoming a blog.  BTW, the photos are great!

PLEASE STAND BY-WestSeattleMag Transitions to Blog
WestSeattleMag.com is transitioning from an online, commercially supported magazine to a blog format (Retaining Domain Name).
Contributors are still welcome and many subjects covered will be similar.
The WestSeattleMag.com will continue to cover West Seattle with a photo-journalistic approach. Additionally there will be opinion and posted comments.

The following are my reasons for transitioning to a blog format:

  • Given very optimistic forecasts, ad revenue would not support an acceptable hourly work wage (based on an extensive financial analysis),
  • Unlike blogs, journalistic publications must adhere to a high standard, reporting the news and not merely publishing from other’s efforts such as previously published articles and transcripts. Meeting this standard each week with sufficient content requires more capital. I plan to give my readers a mix of true journalism and blogisphere content.
  • Postings will be more immediate. Commercial news publications must answer to readership and advertisers with a level of consistency with their timing of released news-resources limited my publication to a weekly. The blog format does require me to be answerable to any time line or deadline.

To all those I asked to share, collaborate or contribute to the WestSeattleMag, the invitation is still open with the knowledge that the content will be posted on a photo-journalistic blog rather than an online magazine.
The blog will start September 1, 2007, given there are no hiccups transferring the domain name.

I’ll post a reminder closer to the unveiling of the new blog in September.

What’s in store for Beach Drive?

Yesterday afternoon, I noticed white dashes painted along both sides of Beach Drive.  Did someone from the city read my rant about bikes on the sidewalks…could it be for a future bike lane?   Is the city preparing to rip up BD much like the rest of West Seattle has tolerated?   Inquiring minds want to know…

Dsc_0063According to the city’s project list  (done well before my rant)…there are plans for a "bicycle improvements from Morgan Junction to Beach Drive (and beyond)".   I’m not sure if this is what the white dashes are about…it appears to be so.

Geez…where will we park?

I may have to drop the West Seattle Blog a line…they know EVERYTHING West Seattle!

Update:  WSB has pointed us to another neighborbood blog:  Miller Park

Has anyone received notice or information about this from our fine City?

Almost Live at the West Seattle Street Fair

Loafing around Great Harvest Bread Co. where we had a delish iced latte here.

The scene at the West Seattle Streetfair was pretty much the same as last year.

I’ll be there again tomorrow to volunteer an hour for the Alki Community Council (across the street from the Rat City Rollers dunk tank).

Who’s In for a Night Out?

Nightoutlogo August 7 is America’s Night Out Against Crime.   I think it would be great if we could coordinate and have a block party to get to know our neighbors better, promote safety and crime prevention.

If we are going to have our neighborhood formally participate, we need to let the Seattle Police Department know prior to July 27, 2007.

If you have any ideas on how we can make this a fun event, or if you’re willing to assist in the planning, please let me know.

Also, if you’re planning a Night Out for your block, please give me a shout so I can post it.   Thanks Neighbor!

Better THAN you think!

Hi all, this is my first post on the BDB and I have decided I would write about something I know about… Lunch in West Seattle.

I have been plundering the restaurants of West Seattle since the early 90’s and I loves the lunch! In my posts I am going to be your amateur review dood, I am reviewing Lunch only, even though in WS the lunch and the Din Din are often the same… BUT THIS IS THE LUNCHBOX! I take into account the two most important Lunch elements, Taste and $. The atmosphere… maybe a little, Service… maybe—– ITS LUNCH! food and $ thats what matters. I am Single and I work at home so as you can imagine, lunch is the great escape! So here we GO. THAN BROTHER’S PHO This place has become a favorite! One word……. Simple,Simple,Simple Oh’ and very tasty! (one word three times and an emotion).  They have pho and thats it, although it comes in several models… Veggie, Chicken, Meatball and many varieties of beef. The other great thing is that you would have to try hard to spend $10 per person… I find that the small or the Medium is more than enough and both are less than $5… now that kicks $#%. They dont skimp on the basil and shoots either! In an effort to kick it up a notch, you also get a cream filled puff pastry? THAN BROTHERS gets 3 and a half LUNCHBOXES out of 5, I don’t know if their is a five so thats good! So thats my first go around:)

If you think I am correct please send your love letters, if not feel free to shred me! OUCH! Till next time… DON’T FORGET YOUR LUNCH

Update on the Alki Statue of Liberty

The following message is from Libby and Paul Carr, Seattle Statue of Liberty Committee–Phase II:

The Alki and West Seattle Community is at an important crossroads as we get ready to bring the newly recast Statue of Liberty back to her home on Alki Beach.  We have to make final strategic decisions between two choices:

  1. New Plaza with a Higher Pedestal:  If we decide to continue with the plans approved last year with input after several community meetings with architects Matt Hutchins and Chris Ezzell, we now need to form a new committee (the Seattle Statue of Liberty Committee—Phase II) and do the necessary fundraising to finish the Statue base and surrounding plaza.  This design clearly incorporates all the bricks (engraved pavers) sold earlier and has plenty of room for more.  It is also specifically designed to make the statue less exposed to vandalism.
  2. Using the old pedestal.  Certain individuals on staff at the Parks Department would prefer that the new Plaza not be built because they just want to finish the project as quickly as possible.  Because of various project delays caused by periods of inactivity by NPA and, ironically, additional ground engineering concerns expressed by the Parks Department, the City’s Park staff now feels badly the statue has not yet been replaced.  Their solution for this delay is to place the newly cast statue onto the old pedestal, which may or may not include the brick pavers, and call it a day.

These are the two basic choices we will be discussing on Wednesday night.  In addition, Libby and Paul will outline fundraising plans being considered so people can get a feel for what types of activities may come into play for raising the necessary funds to do the new plaza quickly.

Please bring your lawn chairs, blankets, picnic dinners and/or non-alcoholic beverages as we have this meeting Wednesday evening at 7:00 PM at the Statue site on Alki Beach, west of the Bathhouse.

If you care about the Statue and what this wonderful space will look like years into the future, you need to be there Wednesday, July 11, at 7:00 PM.  See you then.  We want to hear your voice.  Thanks.  Libby and Paul Carr, Seattle Statue of Liberty Committee—Phase II.

Sidewalk Responsibilities

I just read this article in the Seattle Times about how starting this month, the sidewalks in front of a property is the home owner’s responsibility for maintaining.

"Lots of people are surprised they are responsible, and then there is the reality of how to pay for sidewalk repair when you are strapped with all kinds of other maintenance needs," said Liz Ellis, with the Seattle Department of Transportation Sidewalk Safety Repair Program….

"Generally the city has an easement, but the property itself belongs to the homeowner," said Gregg Hirakawa, spokesman for Seattle’s Department of Transportation.

The easement’s there so the public can traverse what’s actually private property."
