She’s NOT Loony!

This comment was just added from BDB Neighbor, Suky.   I don’t want it to get lost in the comment section of the last post, so here is Suky’s question for our readers:

"Has anyone else heard loons recently? (I’m serious). This is a first for me after 21 years of living here. I heard that distinctive sound yesterday and immediately went to an online audio bird call site to confirm what it was. Heard it again this morning at dawn. And I could have sworn I saw a pair bobbing around companionably off Emma Schmitz Viewpoint at about 5:00 pm. But I’m no ornithologist, so I’m hoping for confirmation. Many thanks for any enlightenment!"

Happy Earth Day.    Don’t forget about the Beach Walk

Beach Walk and Treasure Hunt

Img_5022I was asked from Stephanie at People for Puget Sound to post an upcoming event for BDB readers.    On Sunday, April 22, 2007 from 1:30 – 4:00, you can go on a low tide beach walk along Beach Drive.

Kids are encouraged to join in the fun by bringing trash bags to pick up litter which they can then create recycled art and win prizes!

This event begins at Charles Richey Sr. Viewpoint (Constellation Park)  63rd Ave SW and Beach Drive SW.

Space is limited for this event, please RSVP.    What a great way to celebrate Earth Day.

What to do if you spot a baby seal

West Seattle Blog says a pup has been spotted along Alki.  Here’s what they’ve found out you should do if you see a baby seal.

UPDATE 4/6/2007:  WSB is just on top of it!  Now they have photos of the baby seal on their site…check it out.

You Otter Write for Beach Drive Blog

On my morning walk with Cat Woman, we saw an otter on a rock at Emma Schmitz Max_2006 Park.   So please pardon my Otter pun.    She asked me an excellent question, which I’m sure other BDB readers would like to have answered:   How do you write a post for Beach Drive Blog?

Last month Bob provided tips on writing a blog…he forgot to mention how to process of posting of blog works.

This is how it works (you can click on the photos to get a larger image):

1.)   Send me an email letting me know that you’re interested in writing for Beach Drive Blog.

Typepad_invite_22.)   You will receive an email from Typepad with the subject line stating Rhonda Porter has invited you to join Beach Drive Blog.   Once you open your email, it will look something like this (you would be “Ima Writer”). Accept_2

3.)  Click accept or decline this inviation (underlined in blue).   You will be prompted to the next screen where you will be forced to make a decision:  accept or decline

Bdblogin_2 5.)  You will then be forwarded to a page where you can begin your first post!  Or, you can always visit www.typepad.com and use your login name and password to enter a post at a later date.

4.)  If you all ready have a Typepad account, sign in!  If not, you can register for free.   You will create your Member Name,  Password, email address and birthday.    At the bottom of the page, you will  need to check the box saying you agree with the Typepad Terms.

Composing your first post.

Hey…you got this far…

this is the super easy part….

Bdbnewpost In the title section, you enter the title to your post (what you would like to name your article).    Next, in the light blue post body section, write your post.   Remember, Bob gave you tips just a few weeks ago and how to write a post (just like writing an email to a friend).   In the green section (it’s not showing on this photo, sorry), under the posting status, you can click preview (shows your work in progress) or save.   I really recommend saving as you go along.   You can always make changes after you save.

As an Official Contributing Author to Beach Drive Blog, you can email me photos if you wish to have them included in a post.

Your post will show up listed along with the other post on the admin. (me) side.   I will publish it as soon as I have a chance to.   (I try to publish posts as soon as possible).

You may want to send me an email to notify me of your new post!   We’re approaching 100 post on Beach Drive Blog so there’s quite a few to go through.

I’m really looking forward to more participation.   My only prerequisite is that you are a Beach Drive Neighbor (living on Beach Drive or one of the side streets).   You can see how fun it was to read Natalie’s first contribution to Beach Drive Blog and the more authors we have, the more interesting this blog will be.     Please contact me with any questions.

Bob says “Don’t be Bashful”

Dsc_0684_2 Bob is in search of new writers for the Beach Drive Blog.   He says it’s very simple to write for a blog.  Here are few tips from our friend, Bob on blogging:

1) It’s really no different than writing an email to your friend or neighbor.

2) The post does not have to be long.

3) You can add links to other information that is relevant to your message…or not!

4) Beach Drive Blog can either set you up as a guest author (which is very simple to do).   Just ask!

5) Or you can just submit your message or article directly

6) Photos are optional.   You can email it with your article and I will enter it in your post.

7)  Check out the categories (above left) for some possible ideas of what to write.

Here are some quick ideas for a post on Beach Drive Blog:

  • Garden tips
  • Community events
  • Upcoming garage or yard sales
  • School events
  • Block watch/crime reporting
  • History of Beach Drive or homes along Beach Drive
  • Poetry
  • Restaurant reviews
  • Parks along Beach Drive
  • Announcements (weddings….new babies…. etc.)

So come on…dive in!  It’s a splash.   The more writers, the merrier!

One-Eyed Willy

One-Eyed Willy greeted us today demanding peanuts.   Willy is a squirrel with, yep you guessed it, one eye.    Our two outdoor cats made a run for the safety of the interior of our home and would not mess with this squinting battle hardened critter.

Whale Seen?

While walking my pug at Mee Kwa Mooks this morning, a fellow dog walker mentioned to me that yesterday, around 1:30 in the afternoon, a woman had spotted a whale out by Blake Island.   Has anyone else seen a whale passing by?

I Spy with my Eagle Eye?

This evening, I saw this bird on the shore along Mee Kwa Mooks Park…I’m not sure if it’s an Eagle.   What do you think?

Another Valentine Treat

Dsc_0367While walking Orson, my old pug, this morning I spied a bald eagle in the tree at base of Jacobsen and Beach Drive.

The eagle took flight after being harassed by the seagulls.

That’s no way for a gull to be on Valentines!
