Watch for spectacular “spray” tomorrow on Beach Drive

Mother Nature’s elements are lining up for quite the show after mid-night tonight & through Friday afternoon. A marine forecast calling for near gale force winds combined with tides ranging from 6 to 10 feet is the recipe for huge spray coming off Beach Drive bulkheads. Unlike last December’s storm which flooded several homes along the coastline, tomorrow’s tides are several feet lower.

Great spots to get wet include Emma Schmitz Memorial Overlook and Charles Richey Sr View Point (Constellation Park).

Last Nights Low Tide Beach Walk

Last night there were dozens of flashlights and giggling children of all ages participating in Seattle Aquariums night time beach walk.

Scupper Sr. interviewed a representative from the Seattle Aquarium about the late night exploration off the shores of Beach Drive.

Here’s more from West Seattle Herald.

Happening Now off Emma Schmitz View Point

A group of students from the University of Washington are gathering at Emma Schmitz preparing to check out tonight’s low tide for a biology class.  Tonight’s chilly low tide will be a -2.81 at 9:41 pm.

High Tides at Weather Watch and more

Our intrepid reporter Scupper Sr (aka my husband) has been taking photos of local parks during the high tides.

We’ve been keeping a close eye on the tides and strong winds as our property can flood. If we are preparing for flooding, we do our best to issue a “Barking Dog Report”.  This is a term my husband has “fondly” used to describe yours truly when I’m running around the house, worried about pending trouble – such as flooding. Just like your neighbors barking dog, it’s hopefully much ado about nothing… but you never know!

With the recent redesign of Beach Drive Blog, please be sure to check out the “Swell Links” to the left, which features information about pending weather and tides.  And be sure to follow us on Twitter at www.twitter.com/beachdriveblog. If we wind up losing power and not able to post info on the blog, you may find more info on Twitter.

Be prepared, stay warm!  Let’s hope we’re not issuing any “barking dog reports” over this holiday weekend.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Beach Drive dog finds “Spirit Log”

Found this great carving while walking along the waterfront path at Lincoln Park. Scupper Jr’s  natural pull to the beach (which of course, I fully resist) landed us here…

Disclaimer: Said dog never set a paw on highly enforced beach or artwork/graffiti depending on who’s side you’re on per WSB post.

While this particular carving has been fully documented on West Seattle Blog, a long time resident of Beach Drive informed me that as recent as 3 or 4 years ago he’s has seen several of what he calls “spirit logs” wash up on our local beaches north of Lincoln Park.  He went on to say that he…

“heard there were many but disapeared over time. People, sand and tide moved them.”

A quick Google search uncovered another driftwood carving found near the water in Port Townsend…

I’m squarely in the camp of welcoming these native style carvings onto our beaches. Reminds me of the native heritage of the land we now call home!

Must have been a great place for Beach Drive residents to pack up their new Model T’s and have a picnic!

Local TV network takes notice of Beach Drive’s community safety efforts

Komo 4 just aired a piece on how involvement by the local community helped create a safer park on Beach Drive. You can see one of the most active community members walking their dog Tazi in the news video…

BDB gives a big hat tip to everyone involved in working with the various public agencies in making these safety changes. The additional L.E.D. lighting may not deter all the criminal activity taking place in the park's lower section but it definetly gives an innocent walker-by a chance to see "what's up" before heading down there!

I walked down there the other night and was impressed how the three L.E.D. lights give just the right amount of illumination. There were some fears that the area would be too lit and ruin any ambiance the lower park offers.

The next anticipated change will be a sign noting the park's closing hours.

Me Kwa Mooks Illuminated at Night

Lights at West Seattle's Me Kwa Mooks

Lights installed at Me Kwa Mooks/Emma Schmitz Park

Lights have been installed to help improve safety at Emma Schmitz/Me Kwa Mooks Park. This will help illuminate the lower park along the water which has very little visibility from the street.  The lights have been added to existing light poles.

This is the area where Greggette Guy may have been murdered earlier this year.

Many Beach Drive neighbors and others who typically walk this area are familiar with seeing grafiti and other crimes take place in this section of the park.

Let's hope shedding some light in this secluded area helps to make this park a safer place for all.

The addition of lights to this area of Beach Drive is one of the recommendations from the community safety walk that took place at the beginning of this month. Hat tip to Tazi's human for sharing this tip with us.
