Thanks Neighbors!

Last Tuesday night, Angeline Street closed for neighbors to spend some time together for the annual Seattle Night Out event. It was a wonderful potluck with games and shaved ice for the kids.

We even had a visit from a Seattle Police Officer and Southwest Precinct Crime Prevention Coordinator, Jennifer Danner.

Thank you so much to the Halbergs and all who organized the event and to all the neighbors who participated.

I hope your neighborhood had a chance to celebrate neighbors as well… and of course, we don’t need to wait for the first Tuesday in August to get together, do we?

Beach Drive Exclusive: 4th of July Boat Parade!

We have been informed that the first annual 4th of July Boat Parade will by cruising along the shores off Beach Drive this afternoon. The parade is sponsored by Alki Yacht Club and The Mortgage Porter.

Any neighbor with a boat that can cruise 4 knots (we will make accommodations for slower craft) is welcome to tag along. The parade will start at 2:30 pm today in front of the volly ball courts at Alki and make it’s way around Alki Point, ending at Lincoln Park.

The most decorated vessel will win a Alki Yacht Club burgee. Runner up will receive a commemorative 2020 Mariners baseball schedule magnet.

Happening Now: Power Paddle to Puyallup

If you’re lucky enough to be home right now or near a Beach Drive Park, look to Puget Sound to see Native Americans participating in their annual canoe trek. This year’s event is the Power Paddle to Puyallup. The tribes plan to arrive in Puyallup tomorrow with 108 tribal nations participating.

You can hear some of the participants sing as they paddle against the current and tide as they head south.

This is always such a treat to witness!

Blake Island closure scheduled

Blake Island is closing off the island to visitors this Wednesday through Friday to deal with thinning the enormous rabbit population.

Like many of the larger islands in the San Juans, Blake has seen it’s rabbit population grow out of control. Much of the island’s daucus carota has been decimated which could spell disaster for the beloved deer population. Hundreds of traps will be set mostly on the southeastern and northwestern ends of the island where burrowing is most pronounced.

Park officials have organized volunteer veterinarians from both King and Kitsap counties to spay all females caught during the 2 day closure. “Our goal is to thin the rabbit population by at least two thirds.” said long time ranger Peter Hare. An adoption rescue line has been set up for local residents to provide homes for many of the exiled bunnies. Peter’s team has currently secured homes for 375 rabbits (at the time of writing this article) however, anticipates the need for a few hundred more. They’ve also made this link available for any interested hosts that have questions regarding care for this particular species of San Jaun rabbit. Anglers at Mee Kwa Mooks

What’s with all the tents at Mee Kwa Mooks today? Well…it’s the second annual Emerald Waters Fly Fest!

This event is free and features a cook-off. Last year, the event was held at Lincoln Park. Mee Kwa Mooks appears to be more conducive for this event with the lack of picnic tables. Click here for more info.

Seattle Night Out is Tuesday

Seattle Night Out takes place this Tuesday, August 4th. This is a great opportunity for neighbors to get together to help build community and prevent crime.

If your block doesn’t have an official Seattle Night Out event planned, it’s not too late to plan something. You don’t have to have your event registered with SPD.

Even if you’re just reaching out to immediate neighbors for a pot luck dinner, snacks or share a refreshing beverage or two.

Meet “Scupper’s” Sister aka Seattle’s Bird Lady at Summerfest

My Sister-in-Law, Paula, is a talented artist who creates beautiful, functional copper roofed bird houses with antiques, whimsical, and themed designs. She will be at West Seattle’s Summerfest starting this Friday, in space 3 at “Seattle’s Bird Lady“.

My hubby and intrepid Beach Drive Blog Reporter, Scupper, along with his son, KC, will also be there helping out.
