Potential Barking Dog Report: Wind, Waves and High Tides predicted for tomorrow

We have been keeping an eye on our mobile aps, WindAlert and PredictWind, which are both indicating that we could be in for quite a storm tomorrow morning. This, of course, coincides with very high tides of 12.8 feet at 7:00 am tomorrow morning.

Check out the tides predicted for tomorrow and how it potentially pairs with the wind forecast.

Here is the Puget Sound and Hood Canal Marine Forecast (last updated at 2:41 am):

FRI  S wind 20 to 30 kt. Wind waves 3 to 5 ft. A chance of rain  in the morning then rain likely in the afternoon.

FRI NIGHT  S wind 15 to 25 kt easing to 5 to 15 kt after  midnight. Wind waves 2 to 4 ft subsiding to 2 ft or less after midnight.

If this forecast holds, we think there’s a strong potential that we could experience waves slosh over our bulkhead… especially if the wind direction leans to the southwest.

Last but not least, we’ve used a picture of a howling golden retriever for our “barking dog” reports warning of potential weather issues. We thought you might like to see our retriever in action.

Possible Windy Night

Wind Alert is showing some potentially gusty winds in store later tonight. Our next high tide is 11.56 feet at 4:55 p.m. …just when the winds are predicted to pick up.

The Puget Sound Marine Forecast has issued a small craft advisory through tonight:

TODAY
S wind 15 to 25 kt rising to 20 to 30 kt in the afternoon. Wind waves 3 to 5 ft. Rain likely in the morning then rain in the afternoon.

TONIGHT
S wind 20 to 30 kt. Wind waves 3 to 5 ft. Rain.

The UW’s forecast has not been updated since 3:08 am.

Seattle and Vicinity-
Including the cities of Seattle, Shoreline, Federal Way, and Kent
308 AM PST Tue Jan 22 2019

TODAY…Breezy. Rain likely in the morning, then rain in the afternoon. Rainfall amounts a quarter to a half inch possible. Highs in the mid to upper 40s. South wind 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 35 mph.

TONIGHT…Windy, rain. Rainfall amounts a quarter to a half inch possible. Lows in the lower to mid 40s. South wind 15 to 30 mph with gusts to 40 mph.

It looks like this may just miss us as far as any measurable flooding… however, it could be a spectacular night with plenty of splash. Stay tuned!

High Tides and Winds

It looks like we’re in for another windy day. With a wind advisory in effect until 4:00 pm today and an extra high tide of 12.59 feet at 10:32 this morning.

Here’s the current (8:08 am) Wind Alert forecast. If we do see gusts in the 40s around high tide, it’s quite possible we’ll see some water coming over the bulkhead.

The Puget Sound Marine forecast has a small craft advisory until 10am this morning (last update 2:41 am).

TODAY  S wind 20 to 30 kt rising to 25 to 35 kt in the  afternoon. Wind waves 3 to 6 ft. Rain.

TONIGHT  SW wind 15 to 25 kt. Wind becoming NW 10 to 20 kt N  part in the evening and SW 10 to 20 kt S part in the evening.  Wind waves 2 to 4 ft. A chance of rain.

National Weather Service (4:00 am update).

...WIND ADVISORY NOW IN EFFECT FROM 7 AM THIS MORNING TO 4 PM PST
THIS AFTERNOON...

* WIND...Southerly 20 to 35 mph with gusts 45 to 50 mph.

* SOME AFFECTED LOCATIONS...Port Townsend, Everett, Bremerton,
Seattle, Tacoma, La Push, Ocean Shores, Westport, and Hoquiam.

* IMPACTS...Winds may snap weak branches that have not been
pruned by recent storms, produce isolated power outages, and
make the driving of high-profile vehicles difficult.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Wind Advisory means that winds of 35 mph are expected. Winds
this strong can make driving difficult, especially for high
profile vehicles. Use extra caution.

We’re not sure if this is going to be a “Barking Dog Report” event where we think there will be flooding along Beach Drive… just something to keep alert about at this point… and we will be past high tide in just over two hours.

Stay tuned!

Potential Gale Winds prior to High Tide tomorrow morning

A gale warning has been issued effective 10:00 pm tonight through 10:00 tomorrow morning.  There is a possibility of flooding for those who live on the water off Beach Drive…especially if winds from the South are your nemesis. Based on the models that we rely on for wind predictions, we think we could be in for some real weather tomorrow morning starting around 7:00 am.  It looks like we will have high sustained winds with strong gusts at high tide between 7:45 and 8:30 tomorrow morning with the high tide predicted to be 12.3.

Here’s a snapshot from Windlert

Here is the current Puget Sound forecast:

SUN  S wind 25 to 35 kt easing to 15 to 25 kt in the afternoon.  Wind waves 4 to 6 ft subsiding to 2 to 4 ft in the afternoon.  Rain in the morning then showers in the afternoon.

Of course forecast often change… we like to error on the side of caution when it comes to our weather.

We’ll be posting updates when/if necessary. You can also follow us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/beachdriveblog

Barking Dog Report: HIGH WIND WATCH AND COASTAL FLOODING WATCH

Barking-Dog-ReportI’m crossing my fingers that the current forecasts I’m reading are exaggerating the predictions for Thursday. The coastal flooding is predicted to impact local high tides, causing a 14 ft on Wednesday morning around 8 am and a 14.5 ft on Thursday morning around 9 – 10 am.  Combine this with the high wind watch with possible gusts up to 65 mph and I smell trouble!

If you live on the water along Beach Drive, you might want to make sure you have pumps ready to go and take any actions needed to prepare for potential flooding. Be sure to continue to check the forecast as they do change…hopefully for the better!

Please share this information with your Beach Drive neighbors – they may not be aware of the pending storm.

National Weather Service

...COASTAL FLOOD ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 4 AM TO NOON PST
WEDNESDAY...
...COASTAL FLOOD WATCH IN EFFECT FROM LATE WEDNESDAY NIGHT
THROUGH THURSDAY AFTERNOON...

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN SEATTLE HAS ISSUED A COASTAL
FLOOD ADVISORY...WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 4 AM TO NOON PST
WEDNESDAY. A COASTAL FLOOD WATCH HAS ALSO BEEN ISSUED. THIS
COASTAL FLOOD WATCH IS IN EFFECT FROM LATE WEDNESDAY NIGHT
THROUGH THURSDAY AFTERNOON.

* IMPACTS...MINOR TIDAL OVERFLOW IS EXPECTED TO PRODUCE MINOR
FLOODING IN LOW LYING AREAS AROUND THE INLAND WATERS AROUND HIGH
TIDE ON WEDNESDAY. MORE SERIOUS AND EXTENSIVE COASTAL FLOODING
IS POSSIBLE ON THURSDAY IF A DEEP LOW THAT IS SHOWN BY MANY
FORECAST MODELS COMES IN AROUND HIGH TIDE. THIS DEEP LOW WOULD
PRODUCE A 1 TO 2 FOOT STORM SURGE ON TOP OF PREDICTED TIDE
VALUES AND WOULD BE COMBINED WITH WAVES DEVELOPED BY STRONG
  WINDS.

* TIME OF HIGH TIDE...ABOUT 8 AM PST WEDNESDAY AND 9-10 AM PST
  THURSDAY.

* PREDICTED TIDE...AT SEATTLE ABOUT 14 FEET ON WEDNESDAY AND
POSSIBLY AROUND 14.5 FEET ON THURSDAY. MINOR TIDAL OVERFLOW AT
SEATTLE NORMALLY BEGINS AROUND 13.5 FEET AND SERIOUS COASTAL
FLOODING TYPICALLY BEGINS AT 14.5 FEET. TIDAL ANOMALIES ARE
EXPECTED TO BE SIMILAR AT OTHER LOCATIONS BETWEEN OLYMPIA AND
POINT ROBERTS ALONG THE SHORES OF THE INLAND WATERS.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A COASTAL FLOOD ADVISORY INDICATES THAT ONSHORE WINDS AND TIDES
WILL COMBINE TO GENERATE FLOODING OF LOW AREAS ALONG THE SHORE.

A COASTAL FLOOD WATCH MEANS FLOODING OR BEACH EROSION WILL OCCUR
IF WEATHER CONDITIONS DEVELOP AS PREDICTED. RESIDENTS AND LOCAL
OFFICIALS SHOULD MONITOR THE SITUATION CLOSELY AND BE PREPARED TO
TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION IF A WARNING IS ISSUED.

Storm Update

Weather guru Cliff Mass says the first big fall storm should start right about the time that summer is officially over, at 1:44 pm Sunday which coincides with the kick off for the Seahawks vs Jaguars at Qwest field.

NWS issues Special Weather Statement for Sunday

Last Sunday we had “Blue Thunder” for the Seahawks game…and it looks like this Sunday will bring howling weather as the National Weather Service has issued a Special Weather Statement for the first official day of fall.  It’s probably a good idea to make sure what leaves are currently around drains are cleared (although we’re going to have plenty more coming down).

Potentially damaging weather coming aka a “Barking Dog Report”

It’s been a while since I’ve issued a “barking dog report”. Briefly, a “barking dog report” is when we are preparing for possible flooding due to extreme wind and waves. Hopefully a “barking dog” is just me sounding off, much like a neighbors dog, when they’re worried and there’s no real danger to worry about.

The combo of the King Tides and what Mother Nature has forecast, has us concerned through Monday night. Below are the  reports we’re looking at. Forecast do change and you can click the links on the “Swell Links” column to the right to see the latest data.

PS: Cliff Mass warns of a possible significant wind event on Monday too.

If you have neighbors who tend to flood from the sound coming over the bulkhead, you may want to share this information with them. As I mentioned, I hope I’m just being a “barking dog” and worrying over nothing – however, we’ve found it really pays to be prepared when there is a possible weather event such as this.

At the very least, you may want to get leaves out of the street and clear gutters to help the streets drain.
