Why we have a policy

Beach Drive Blog has always been a place for neighbors to share what’s happening — sightings, questions, help finding a lost pet, updates on local issues. Lately, with more attention on things like the derelict boats along the beach, the comments have gotten busier, and occasionally sharper. This policy is here so the conversation stays useful and welcoming, not to shut it down.

What we welcome

  • Local news, questions, and updates
  • Different opinions and honest disagreement — including disagreement with neighbors, agencies, or decisions
  • Firsthand information (what you saw, when, where)
  • Humor, community spirit, and the occasional off-topic aside

What we don’t allow

  • Name-calling or labeling other commenters, regardless of how the conversation is going
  • Personal attacks, insults, or mocking another commenter rather than their point
  • Harassment, threats, or targeting a specific person (neighbor, business owner, or public official)
  • Spam, solicitation, or off-topic promotion

How this is enforced

This isn’t a full-time job for anyone, and it’s not meant to be. In practice:

  • Comments that clearly violate the policy will be hidden or deleted, without a lot of back-and-forth about it.
  • Someone who does it repeatedly may be blocked from commenting.
  • We’re not going to referee every disagreement or fact-check every claim — just keep the tone civil.

A note on the boat situation (and topics like it)

Frustration about derelict boats, safety, or the pace of city response is completely fair game to express. Please direct that frustration at the situation and the responsible parties — not at neighbors who are trying to sort it out in the comments alongside you.

A note on storms and severe weather

Storm threads move fast and people are often anxious, dealing with outages, or worried about trees and property. Sharing real-time updates, warnings, and help offers is exactly what this page is for. But storms also bring out strong opinions about who prepped enough, who’s overreacting, or who’s not taking it seriously — please leave those judgments out. Focus on information and helping neighbors, not critiquing how someone else is handling it.
