Water Bubbling from Beach Drive?

We've had two different inquires on water issues along Beach Drive.

From a Beach Drive reader last night:

I was biking along Beach Drive tonight heading north from Lincoln Park towards Emma Schmitz Park and ran across water bubbling out of the streets not far from where the slide was this past winter.

Do you have any idea what this is?  Is is just stormwater runoff or is it sewage?

From another BDB reader this morning:

On my way to work this morning (along the 5900 block of Beach Drive) there was a hole in the road and a small water geyser.

Looked like the water main under the road had broken.

Does anyone have information on what's going on around the 5900 block of Beach Drive?

Seattle Aquarium Field Trip to Emma Schmitz Marine Preserve

This afternoon, we found a group of high school students on a field trip with the Seattle Aquarium at the Emma Schmitz Memorial Park to study to marine preserve.

Along Beach Drive, we actually have two marine preserves: Emma Schmitz  and Charles Ritchey.

Low Tide plus Sunny Day = the Moon Snail Poacher (or is she just harvesting)

She's back stocking her bag full.   I first noticed her collecting shells on Emma Schmitz Park, however she has since moved south to private property along Beach Drive.

This person is frequently along these shores illegally harvesting moon snail shells.   Here's a link to a previous post with more information about the violation and who to call when you see poaching.

People who have lived in this area for a long time will tell you how the shores used to be stocked with shells.  Harvesting, especially someone as active and consistant as this lady, has diminished this sea-life.

Let's hope she's not selling this to a restaurant.

Update 12:30: check out her full bag of loot…and she's still looking for more.

Update 1:30 pm.   Another concerned neighbor contacted the SPD who did meet this lady on the beach.  This is out of the SPD's jurisdiction however she did cooperate and show the Officer that all of the shells are empty.   He instructed her to contact the Fish and Wildlife Department to confirm whether or not removing empty moon snail shells from a marine reserve is legal.

We hope to do a follow up post on whether or not the removal of empty shells from Emma Schmitz (or a marine reserve) is legal.

A Beautiful Day for a Sail Boat Race in Seattle

It appears the Seattle Yacht Club is having a Regatta around Vashon and Maurey Island today.   This is the second race in a series of three.  The last of the Tri-Island will be Blake Island on June 5, 2010.  I can't wait!

Just Crusing By

It looks like we have the Seattle Yacht Club racing in our back yards today…a post will follow.   While I've been happily snapping photos of the sailboats on this beautiful sunny Seattle day, I noticed this Army Tug.

I believe it's the LT 802 MGen. Henry Knox 1994 …but I'm not 100% certain.   Do you know?
