Never a dull moment covering Beach Drive.

Aiviq: Monster Arctic ice buster spotted heading south…

Every now & then an unusual vessel will cross our waters and warrant some BDB research! A spokesman from the ship's builder mentions that this $200 mil giant ice breaker recently built in Louisiana and commissioned by Shell Oil is considered…

"the largest vessel ever built by Chouest, and will be among the most advanced and powerful, non-military icebreakers on the waters."

I suddenly have "bigger boat" envy!

Local TV network takes notice of Beach Drive’s community safety efforts

Komo 4 just aired a piece on how involvement by the local community helped create a safer park on Beach Drive. You can see one of the most active community members walking their dog Tazi in the news video…

BDB gives a big hat tip to everyone involved in working with the various public agencies in making these safety changes. The additional L.E.D. lighting may not deter all the criminal activity taking place in the park's lower section but it definetly gives an innocent walker-by a chance to see "what's up" before heading down there!

I walked down there the other night and was impressed how the three L.E.D. lights give just the right amount of illumination. There were some fears that the area would be too lit and ruin any ambiance the lower park offers.

The next anticipated change will be a sign noting the park's closing hours.

Sea Lion or Seal?

At first glance, we didn’t realize this was a sea lion (or seal?) floating by.

Hoping this fella is feeling well and just enjoying the last evening of Spring. We caught these photos just in front of Emma Schmitz Memorial View Point.

FOUND: Two Pugs [REUNITED]

UPDATE: Great news!! The pugs owner has been located! This happy event calls for a little song.

Thanks to all of the neighbors who helped reunite the pugs with their humans!

A black and fawn Pug have just been found wandering along Beach Drive just north of Jacobson.  A neighbor is caring for them hoping their owners are able to pick them up soon.

If you are missing your pups (they appear to be 2 years or younger) please let us know!

Lights installed at Me Kwa Mooks/Emma Schmitz Park

Lights have been installed to help improve safety at Emma Schmitz/Me Kwa Mooks Park. This will help illuminate the lower park along the water which has very little visibility from the street.  The lights have been added to existing light poles.

This is the area where Greggette Guy may have been murdered earlier this year.

Many Beach Drive neighbors and others who typically walk this area are familiar with seeing grafiti and other crimes take place in this section of the park.

Let's hope shedding some light in this secluded area helps to make this park a safer place for all.

The addition of lights to this area of Beach Drive is one of the recommendations from the community safety walk that took place at the beginning of this month. Hat tip to Tazi's human for sharing this tip with us.

Missing something??

This is the time of year when we see detached mooring buoys take a cruise along the shores of Beach Drive. The combo of newly grown kelp, sea-critters and extreme Spring tides will test for any weak links in a mooring system.

Anyone want to claim this one? Found off our place on Thursday's extreme low tide…

Before adding the tug of your boat to your float, might be a good idea to examine the shape of your gear. I was a bit nervous putting my 17 foot fishing boat out in early May for the Spot Shrimp season so employed Alpha Marine Installations to dive down and take a look. They've installed several systems along the "Drive" and will periodically offer to do a complete inspection and cleaning for $200. Pretty cheap insurance considering the alternative!

Is that another loose ball I see floating down the drive? This one's just off the south end of Emma Schmitz park.

Don’t look now… but a sub appears to be a sub passing by Bainbridge Island. Hat tip to “Cat Woman”.

Police and Neighbors walk Beach Drive Parks in an effort to improve safety

If not for our youngest son graduating from Kennedy High School last night, we would have joined our neighbors on the Beach Drive Community Walk.  Thanks to West Seattle Blog and West Seattle Herald for covering this.  And a huge thanks to the neighbors who were able to participate in the safety walk and have shared their views about last night's walk.

It's interesting to me that the representative from the Seattle Parks Department expressed concern about maintaining privacy in a public park.

Did you participate in last night's walk?  We'd love to have your input on how you thought it went.

Hopefully this will be an event that will cause more action to be taken by the City to improve the safety of these parks.

Mark Solomon with the Seattle Police Department indicated to me that it's possible that we may have more community safety walks in the future.

Now that the safety walk has happened, and the various representives from the police and parks department have talked the talk, will they walk the walk?  Only their actions will tell.
