Possible dead Orca off of Beach Drive [Update: Not dead… and not an Orca]

West Seattle Herald is reporting (via Facebook) a possible dead orca off of the shores of Beach Drive:

A dead orca has been spotted off Beach Drive, about 60 feet off shore near 64th SW. We have a reporter on the scene. More shortly.

UPDATE: “Scupper Sr.” is back from the scene. It’s confirmed as a big ol’ napping sea lion with his flipper i

n the air. Good news! Here is the scene from Charles Richey Sr Viewpoint.

This weekend’s King Tides become a Royal Pain?

West Seattle Herald recently wrote about the King Tides that will be topping out at 13 feet along our shoreline this weekend…

So called King Tides (a non-scientific term) simply refers to the very highest tides. They occur when the earth, moon and sun are aligned at perigee (when the moon is closest to earth) and perihelion (when the earth is closest to the sun), resulting in the largest tidal range seen during a year since the gravitational effects are magnified.

While NOAA does not expect additional tidal height due to coastal flooding, the Marine Forecast has issued southerly winds between 15/ 25 knots with 2-4 foot waves to boot during Saturday’s extreme high tide…

Beach Drive dog finds “Spirit Log”

Found this great carving while walking along the waterfront path at Lincoln Park. Scupper Jr’s  natural pull to the beach (which of course, I fully resist) landed us here…

Disclaimer: Said dog never set a paw on highly enforced beach or artwork/graffiti depending on who’s side you’re on per WSB post.

While this particular carving has been fully documented on West Seattle Blog, a long time resident of Beach Drive informed me that as recent as 3 or 4 years ago he’s has seen several of what he calls “spirit logs” wash up on our local beaches north of Lincoln Park.  He went on to say that he…

“heard there were many but disapeared over time. People, sand and tide moved them.”

A quick Google search uncovered another driftwood carving found near the water in Port Townsend…

I’m squarely in the camp of welcoming these native style carvings onto our beaches. Reminds me of the native heritage of the land we now call home!

Killer Whale Sunset

We spied whales heading south between Blake Island and Lincoln Park. Two lucky boaters got an extra close up view.

Otter pops, I mean pups!

It’s been wonderful watching this family of otters traveling back and forth at dusk and dawn. Is there anything cutter than otter pups?

This Italian beauty has mahogany skin, classic lines and just turned 50!

So there I was sitting out on the deck minding my own business when I hear this beautiful thunder just off the shore of Beach Drive. As I spun my head around, there she was, flying in the water with the classic rooster-tail and rumble that prompted my childhood buddies and I to drag boat shaped wooden blocks behind our stingray bikes!

CelliInWater

Her name is Sentimental Hayes and has a proud new owner, Pat Price. Pat tells me she's a Cantieri "Celli" that was originally crafted in 1961, 20 feet in length and may be one of only three imported into the states.

The I.D. plate reads Cantieri Navali Celli Venezia

From what I can squeeze out of google, the boat builder may have been located on Sant'Elena Island near Venice.

Pat recently purchased this gem where it has sat in Lake Tapps back in the days before they cut down the trees! Here's some more pics as it sits on it's trailer for some fine tuning…

Happening now in Puget Sound: Tribes canoeing to Puyallup

You may have heard the chants of local tribes canoeing on their journey to Puyallup this morning. These multitades of canoes from various NW tribes is all part of "Paddle to Squaxin 2012". Here is a video report from Scupper Sr. interviewing members of the Quinault Tribe:

Today's route to Puyallup is highlighted below…

Is it safe for Fido to get in the water?

Numerous articles and publications regarding algae blooms have been circulating throughout local government sites and are now making their way around local West Seattle veterinarian clinics. Now that our family has added a virtual land seal (Scupper Jr.) to the pack, I figured it was wise to know more about the safety of dog paddling along our Beach Drive shores.

2012-07-19_16-16-21_901

This bulletin (commonly found in many states) has stirred up some confusion as to the safety of pets swimming in or around the algae blooms commonly seen on our marine beaches. As far as I can tell, these warnings are targeted specifically for lakes, ponds, rivers and non-moving estuaries. ALTHOUGH, I do have major reservations letting our pup thrash around in the colorful Puget Sound soup known as Noctiluca.

According to reports, The Washington Department of Ecology is still uncertain what else may be included in the unprecedented amount of recent algae blooms…

"They know for sure they have large amounts of common Noctiluca algae, which looks like tomato soup, but they have not identified several other strains they observed."

Conclusion: Your pets are likely to be just fine after swimming around these blooms but until I hear more, it's "Scupper, leave it!"
