Sailboat taking on water near Mee-Kwa-Mooks Park

An older model tri-moran has nearly beached itself for repairs off off Beach Drive…

The captain mentioned that it is NOT an emergency and was hoping to score an extra bilge pump to rid the water. He later explained that the leak was from the area of the auxiliary motor well and will probably need to beach the boat on a sandy bar for patching the leak. He went on to say “good thing for the extra two pontoons!”.

At least the weather is calm (for now) and it’s not pouring on his furniture! Tip of the hat to our good neighbor Michelle for the heads up.

Finally had the camera to capture a resident Bald Eagle chowing on a salmon near 4700 block of Beach Drive.  The chase was on after being spooked off the beach by a passing truck…

And they call it… Puppy Love!

As my dog was leaving wee-mail on a nearby telephone pole, I thought I was about to read another “missing pet” sign to report on Beach Drive Blog. It was pleasant surprise to see this instead…

Along with this personal note from momma Chloe…

These pups are from Setter Ridge Kennels out of Clinton WA. Their website had this to say about the breed…

English Setters love to be with people and have house time. They are very friendly and affectionate dogs and don’t care to be left out in a kennel.

There are 4 females and 1 male to hold, cuddle and admire… just don’t get too attached to these adorable pure-breds if you know what I mean *wink-wink*!

Scupper’s chase of sirens leads to Ducks

After a day of historic flooding on Beach Drive SW, this was a small fire that the waves didn’t put out tonight…

One of the three fire truck responders told us that a small fire broke out in a planter on the upper deck of this home. Damage was thankfully minimal. Wazzu by-stander had no comment.

This weekend’s King Tides become a Royal Pain?

West Seattle Herald recently wrote about the King Tides that will be topping out at 13 feet along our shoreline this weekend…

So called King Tides (a non-scientific term) simply refers to the very highest tides. They occur when the earth, moon and sun are aligned at perigee (when the moon is closest to earth) and perihelion (when the earth is closest to the sun), resulting in the largest tidal range seen during a year since the gravitational effects are magnified.

While NOAA does not expect additional tidal height due to coastal flooding, the Marine Forecast has issued southerly winds between 15/ 25 knots with 2-4 foot waves to boot during Saturday’s extreme high tide…

Resident chases off prowlers breaking into trailered boat

Appears that your fishing/pleasure boats may have been safer in the water than on land.  A neighbor’s off of SW Angeline (4700 block of Beach Drive) thwarted an attempted theft by prowler(s) rummaging under the canvas cover of their trailered boat on Tuesday.  The incident was reported to the police but haven’t heard of any arrests.

Probably a good idea to remove any semi-attached electronics, fishing gear, trolling motors, etc. off your boats this off- season. Keep in mind that thieves have no problem taking the transom along with your small outboards! Yes, I found out the hard way a few years back…

Beach Drive dog finds “Spirit Log”

Found this great carving while walking along the waterfront path at Lincoln Park. Scupper Jr’s  natural pull to the beach (which of course, I fully resist) landed us here…

IMG 1165
Disclaimer: Said dog never set a paw on highly enforced beach or artwork/graffiti depending on who’s side you’re on per WSB post.

While this particular carving has been fully documented on West Seattle Blog, a long time resident of Beach Drive informed me that as recent as 3 or 4 years ago he’s has seen several of what he calls “spirit logs” wash up on our local beaches north of Lincoln Park.  He went on to say that he…

“heard there were many but disapeared over time. People, sand and tide moved them.”

A quick Google search uncovered another driftwood carving found near the water in Port Townsend…

I’m squarely in the camp of welcoming these native style carvings onto our beaches. Reminds me of the native heritage of the land we now call home!

Did you ever see “Spot Run” on Beach Drive?

If you lived around Beach Drive SW in the 50’s & 60’s, one of these children’s book characters may have been modeled after you!

BookPic

As it turns out, a famous author named Elizabeth Rider Montgomery lived in this home located in the 4800 block of Beach Drive SW.

Dick_and_Jane

The address has changed around a  little but this is where Elizabeth wrote/collaborated on many of her books.

Moved onto Beach Drive with her husband Norman in 1/8/49

MontgomeryWD2
Moved out with second husband on 12/14/1972 (ok, my title insurance background is rearing it’s head again)

Among many other publications to her name, Elizabeth co-authored on several of the iconic Dick and Jane book series. The first coming in 1940…

WeLookandSee

Ms Montgomery landed a staff writer position with the Scott Foresman Company and published 14 more books as well as a series entitled Heath for All between 1940-1965.

A more complete bio of the author and her life’s work can be found at this site published by Western Washington University where she enrolled in 1925 when it was then called Washington Normal School.  The West Seattle Herald also published an excellent story about her in December of 1969.

She passed in 1985 and is buried next to her husband in Poulsbo’s city cemetery.

It just goes to show you, it’s good to know…

Special Note: The long time current resident of this home informed me that she purchased the home back 1987 from the, at the time, manager of  famous Seattle area rock group Queensryche! He also played a key role (founder) in opening Easy Street Records at the “Junction”.

This Italian beauty has mahogany skin, classic lines and just turned 50!

So there I was sitting out on the deck minding my own business when I hear this beautiful thunder just off the shore of Beach Drive. As I spun my head around, there she was, flying in the water with the classic rooster-tail and rumble that prompted my childhood buddies and I to drag boat shaped wooden blocks behind our stingray bikes!

CelliInWater

Her name is Sentimental Hayes and has a proud new owner, Pat Price. Pat tells me she's a Cantieri "Celli" that was originally crafted in 1961, 20 feet in length and may be one of only three imported into the states.

CelliPlaque
The I.D. plate reads Cantieri Navali Celli Venezia

From what I can squeeze out of google, the boat builder may have been located on Sant'Elena Island near Venice.

Pat recently purchased this gem where it has sat in Lake Tapps back in the days before they cut down the trees! Here's some more pics as it sits on it's trailer for some fine tuning…
