House Fire around 4200 Beach Drive

I just learned about this via West Seattle Blog on Facebook.   A home at 4200 Beach Drive caught fire.  According to WSB,  "Beach Drive is blocked off from La Rustica to Me Kwa Mooks because of the callout" and Metro route 37 may be impacted.

Read more here from West Seattle Blog.

Update 8:00 a.m.:   By the time I reached the home, the fire was put out and the road was still blocked beginning at the north point of Mee Kwa Mooks.  Thankfully this is a home that was not yet occupied (home with angular roof).

WSB reports that "one firefighter suffered an arm injury and had to go to the hospital".

The brick red house below is the property that caught fire.   Neighbors report they smelled smoke around 5:00 a.m. this morning.

Update 10:30 am:  via West Seattle Blog's Twitter that the fire has been ruled accidental with $250,000 in damages.

Andover Place

Andover Place is a park where Andover meets Beach Drive and is a "street ends" park.   The City of Seattle describes it as "simply a narrow grassy slope between buildings providing public access to the beach".

The land was given to Seattle by Edward and Betty Grad in 1948 with the condition that it be "used exclusively for public recreation and acess to waters of Puget Sound".

More of my photos of this "pocket park" are located here.

Andover Place is located at 4000 Beach Drive SW, Seattle.

Welcome Winston: Beach Drive Blog’s Pet of the Week

Winston is a French Bull Dog who recently moved to Beach Drive with his humans.   I'm told he has his own blog…hopefully we'll post a link to it soon.   Welcome to Beach Drive, Winston!

Do you have a neighborbood furry friend you would like to be featured as a Beach Drive Blog Pet of the Week?  Send me their cute photo to my email address in the upper left corner of this web site.

And what to my wondering eyes should appear?

…if I'm not mistaken…on the sound end of Beach Drive…Christmas lights.

Barking Dog Report

Istock_000002610704medium_1 It's been a while since I've issued a "Barking Dog Report" so for those of you new to Beach Drive Blog, a "Barking Dog Report" is when we feel there may be some issues caused by wind, high tides/big waves where you might have to dig out your extra pumps to protect  your property.  Hopefully a "barking dog report" is no different than your neighbor's yappin' dog just looking out for everybody…it doesn't hurt to be prepared.  We assume no liability whether or whether not the weather whammo's us… we are just sharing our concern and/or alert level… with that said… (lights are flickering as I write this so I'm publishing as I post).

Here is the current Puget Sound Marine Forecast (click for updates–they do change).  I must admit…if I see up to 5 ft waves…I'm leaning towards posting a BDR…especially SW winds.

…SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT THROUGH SATURDAY AFTERNOON…

TONIGHT…SW WIND 15 TO 25 KT. WIND WAVES 2 TO 4 FT. SHOWERS AND SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS.

SAT…S WIND 15 TO 25 KT…BECOMING SW 20 TO 30 KT IN THE AFTERNOON. WIND WAVES 2 TO 5 FT. SHOWERS AND SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS.

SAT NIGHT…S WIND 10 TO 20 KT. WIND WAVES 1 TO 3 FT. SHOWERS AND CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS IN THE EVENING…THEN CHANCE OF SHOWERS AFTER MIDNIGHT.

SUN…S WIND 10 TO 20 KT. WIND WAVES 1 TO 3 FT.

SUN NIGHT…S WIND 15 TO 25 KT RISING TO 20 TO 30 KT AFTER MIDNIGHT. WIND WAVES 2 TO 5 FT.

Oh hail! Here's the forecast for the City of Seattle:

TONIGHT…BREEZY. SHOWERS AND SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS. SOME THUNDERSTORMS MAY PRODUCE SMALL HAIL. LOWS 40 TO 45. SOUTHWEST WIND 15 TO 25 MPH.

SATURDAY…BREEZY. SHOWERS AND SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS. SOME THUNDERSTORMS MAY PRODUCE SMALL HAIL. HIGHS NEAR 50. SOUTH WIND 15 TO 25 MPH.

So… our next high tide is an 11.7 at 8:56 tomorrow morning.  The tide only goes down to a 7.7 at 2:29 pm and then back up to a 9.7 at 6:35 pm.

Again, nothing guaranteed with Mother Nature…just consider this a report from your neighbors friendly concerned barking dog.  May be something…maybe not.

Rest in Peace, Officer Brenton

Wild Windy Weather

Our lights have been flickering every once in a while and I'm seeing via Twitter that parts of Queen Anne and Magnolia have had power outages.   West Seattle Blog reports a tree is down in The Junction.

Luckily we have low tides right now or we would probably be issuing a "barking dog report" warning of potential significant water issues that are a part of living on Beach Drive.   Our local weather station on Beach Drive has reported wind gusts up to 46 mph tonight.   Weather like this serves as an excellent reminder to make sure you're prepared for big storms.

Here's the current report from the City of Seattle:

TONIGHT…WINDY. RAIN THIS EVENING…THEN SHOWERS LIKELY AFTER MIDNIGHT. LOWS IN THE 40S. SOUTH WIND 20 TO 30 MPH BECOMING SOUTHWEST 15 TO 20 MPH AFTER MIDNIGHT.

FRIDAY…SHOWERS AND A CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS. HIGHS IN THE UPPER 40S TO MID 50S. SOUTH WIND 15 TO 20 MPH.

FRIDAY NIGHT…RAIN. LOWS IN THE 40S. SOUTH WIND 10 TO 20 MPH.

And the Puget Sound Marine Forecast:

…SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT THROUGH FRIDAY EVENING…

TONIGHT…S WIND 20 TO 30 KT…BECOMING SW 15 TO 25 KT AFTER MIDNIGHT. WIND WAVES 3 TO 5 FT…SUBSIDING TO 2 TO 4 FT. RAIN IN THE EVENING…THEN SHOWERS AND CHANCE OF TSTMS AFTER MIDNIGHT.

FRI…S WIND 15 TO 25 KT. WIND WAVES 2 TO 4 FT. SHOWERS AND CHANCE OF TSTMS.

FRI NIGHT…S WIND 15 TO 25 KT. WIND WAVES 2 TO 4 FT. RAIN IN THE EVENING. SHOWERS AND CHANCE OF TSTMS AFTER MIDNIGHT.

Our next high tide is an 11.9 at 8:00 tomorrow morning following a very low -2.8 at 12:30 am tonight (okay, technially tomorrow morning).   The tides will reach a low point of 7.8 at 1:24pm tomorrow and then up to a 10.4 at 5:58 pm.
