Is it Time to Build Up Your Bulkhead?

This article in Friday’s Seattle PI states that under worse case scenario, the Puget Sound may be 2 feet higher by 2100 based on a report released Thursday by scientists with the University of Washington and state Department of Ecology:
"The calculations took multiple factors into account. In the plus column are the increased water coming from melting glaciers and ice caps, including the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets, and the expansion of the oceans as they warm. Changes in wind patterns can push more water ashore, raising sea level. Geological factors, namely plate tectonics, can shove land masses upward or sink them. In general, the Northwest coast is slowly rising while as you move southeast, the land sinks.
Adding that together, the average scenario shows by 2050 no sea level rise for the northwest portion of the Olympic Peninsula, a 5-inch rise for the central and southern portion of the coast and a 6-inch rise for the Puget Sound region".
At the very least, this could be a good time to inspect your bulkhead for possible damage to make sure it can weather our storms. The last few have been close calls for our home…a few more inches of water coming over would have done it for us.
Should a Beach Drive bulkhead fail, it could be detrimental to many nearby homes.

Kingfisher on the Roof

One of the many benefits of living in our small corner of the world is the beautiful scenery and wildlife. "Bob the Seal" is still hanging around just south of Emma Schmitz Memorial Park and I just spied this Kingfisher perched on my neighbors roof. He flew away right when I began to open my window for a clearer shot.

Tired of Seattle’s Zoning?

Yesterday this comment was left on Beach Drive’s post about how to leave a comment. In the absence of having a true "forum" I suppose that’s the best place to do this (until I figure something else out). Anyhow, Tom’s comment about our zoning (or lack thereof) has been sticking in my mind. I also feel strongly about what is being allowed to happen to our neighborhoods and thought I should create a post about this comment instead of allowing it to be "buried" as a comment. From Tom:
As a builder in WS I am so tired to see the zoning that is allowed in some of our neighborhoods. The city is to blame for this, our great mayor and team of DPD specialists that do not make the requirements tougher. What about design review, steel buildings being built in WS? What is up with that? Zoning and an architectural review board needs to be established or we will all be victims of this crisis. Building nice looking and well laid out units can be done, the only problem with other builders are $$$ and can they buy the big yacht.
In my opinion, you can truly tell the builders who have pride in their work and who perhaps live in the area apart from those who are trying to cram as many units they can onto a small lot for the sole purpose of $$$. Okay…I’ve said my part.

An attractive “No Soliciting” Sign

At our last block watch meeting, it was strongly suggested by Benjamin Kinlow, SPD Community Crime Prevention Coordinator, that everyone install a "No Solicitation" sign. Some at our meeting expressed an interest in having a pretty or friendly "No Solicitation" sign. We found this tarnished copper sign at Rejuvenation on 1st Avenue for some pretty pennies: $36.00.

We went from a sunny Sunday to a blustery Monday with a chance of snow in the forecast. That’s a drop of 20 degrees in just one day! Luckily we’re past our high tide today and tomorrow looks more calm (including a possible morning snow shower).
REST OF TODAY…MORNING RAIN…THEN SHOWERS THIS AFTERNOON. BECOMING WINDY. HIGHS IN THE MID TO UPPER 40S. SOUTH WIND 10 TO 20 MPH…BECOMING SOUTHWEST 20 TO 30 MPH WITH GUSTS NEAR 40 THIS AFTERNOON.

Spring Fever

Today’s wonderful sunny break is just enough to give you a dose of Spring Fever! Beach Drive was full of bicyclist, joggers and gardeners. According to the weather station, we reached a balmy 52 degrees today. Thank you, Mother Nature!
