Are you ready for snow?

I cannot recall Spring weather like this.   I was convinced with our gorgeous warm Saturday that we had last week that it was "safe" to pull plants out of our garage…well today they’re going back.   Here’s the forecast for Seattle:

TODAY…NUMEROUS SHOWERS. HIGHS IN THE MID 40S TO LOWER 50S. SOUTHWEST WIND 10 TO 20 MPH.

TONIGHT…MOSTLY CLOUDY WITH SCATTERED SHOWERS. PRECIPITATION MAY MIX WITH SNOW. LOWS IN THE 30S. SOUTHWEST WIND 10 TO 15 MPH.

SATURDAY…MOSTLY CLOUDY WITH SCATTERED SHOWERS. PRECIPITATION MAY FALL AS SNOW IN THE MORNING. HIGHS IN THE 40S TO LOWER 50S. SOUTH WIND 10 TO 15 MPH IN THE MORNING BECOMING LIGHT.

The marine forecast for Puget Sound:

…SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM NOON PDT TODAY THROUGH THIS AFTERNOON…

TODAY…SW WIND 10 TO 15 KT…EXCEPT NW 10 KT FROM SEATTLE NORTH EARLY THIS MORNING. SW WIND RISING TO 15 TO 25 KT SOUTH OF SEATTLE THIS AFTERNOON. WIND WAVES 1 TO 3 FT BUILDING TO 2 TO 4 FT SOUTH OF SEATTLE THIS AFTERNOON.

An Otter Body Experience

This morning while walking my dog towards Emma Schmitz Memorial View Point, I noticed an otter swimming towards shore.   I stopped to watch him as I don’t see as many otters as I’d like to and the little fella swam right towards me.   The tide is low this morning and I could see him under water as he made a few dives.   The otter then came out of the water right towards me and appeared to try to climb the tall bulkhead along the park when two crows decided they had an issue with him.   He scurried towards the rocks as I made a beeline back home hoping to capture a photo.   I missed my photo op but I’m very tickled to have had my "otter experience" this morning.

If you capture any photos of otters or other local wildwife, please share — I’d love to post them here at Beach Drive Blog.

How Low Can You Go?

Not as low as yesterday’s low tide of minus 2.5 which brought field trips of giggling and oohing children to Mee Kwa Mooks and along the shore below Emma Schmitz View Point.

Today’s low tide will be a minus 2.2 at 2:54 this afternoon and this Heron doesn’t seem to mind one bit.

What’s going on at Jacobsen and Beach Drive yesterday?

I received this email from a concerned neighbor this morning…I don’t have any answers, do you?

Yesterday (4/8 at 3:00 pm), I saw 3 trucks and about 6 guys (all with clipboards and wearing orange vests) on the water side of Jacobsen and Beach Drive. One of the truck had "Waste Management" on it. I was wondering if you knew anything about this or what their up to.

Could this have something to do with the sea wall and where the grass is sinking along the park?  Inquiring minds want to know!

Power Point Presentation of the Alki Sidewalk Project

Hat tip to Larry Carpenter, Membership Secretary of the Alki Community Council for sharing this information about the proposed sidewalk linking Alki to Beach Drive:

If you missed last Wednesday’s public meeting on the Alki Point sidewalk project, here’s the link to SDOT’s website and the PowerPoint presentation. Just scroll down and click on the Alki project to view the slide show. It’s not too late to send your comments pro or con to SDOT’s Sidewalk Program Director Sandra Woods, telephone 733-9408, sandra.woods@seattle.gov.

USS John C. Stennis, Sail Boats and Yacht Photos

While I was taking a break, my husband captured several photos that I want to share with you.

On March 28, 2008 the Aircraft USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74) was cruising through Puget Sound leaving Bremerton after six months of pampering and upgrades to get her into "ship-shape" form.

The very next day, March 29, 2008 we were treated to a sail boat race.   Does anyone have more information on this event?

Later that afternoon, a "ghost ship" passes by…

And last but not least, it appears Delta Marine was cruising one of their luxury yachts. I believe this one is the Marama.    Delta Marine’s most famous yacht is the Laurel.
