Video of last nights fireworks off Beach Drive

Lots of oohs, ahs and wows took place last night watching the beautiful fireworks display that took place off the shores of Beach Drive by Me Kwa Mooks Park.

Don’t be Alarmed! Last Resort Fire Dept. just chill’n at Mee-Kwa-Mooks

Vintage fire trucks and crew take some time to relax after cruising the West Seattle parade earlier today…

Orson Memorial Water Bowl unveiling Monday 4/15/13 at 7PM (water fountain @ Emma Schmitz Overlook Park)

If we had a category for this post it would read “Just for the helluvit”! The idea comes from an unknown kind soul that planted a purple bowl beneath the drinking fountain last year for all our 4 legged friends to drink out of. That bowl must have blown away during one of the winter storms so… we want to pay it forward this year with a stainless dog bowl in memory of an old friend named Orson that used to hobble (on a good day) out to that section of Emma Schmitz park. Rain or shine, bring your walking buddy out to the fountain at 7:00 tomorrow night for the first slurp of the season!

Andrew at Metropolitan Market WINS “Best Bagger” in National Competition!

A huge congrats to Andrew for winning the National Bagger Championships competition in Las Vegas. I was just at Metropolitan Market, where Andrew bags groceries when not competing to be the national best, where it was announced over their loud speakers. Shoppers and employees stopped to clap and cheer for Andrew!!

Pictured is the back of a shirt that several of Andrew’s co-workers are wearing today in Andrew’s honor.

Now we know someone famous!

And they call it… Puppy Love!

As my dog was leaving wee-mail on a nearby telephone pole, I thought I was about to read another “missing pet” sign to report on Beach Drive Blog. It was pleasant surprise to see this instead…

These pups are from Setter Ridge Kennels out of Clinton WA. Their website had this to say about the breed…

English Setters love to be with people and have house time. They are very friendly and affectionate dogs and don’t care to be left out in a kennel.

There are 4 females and 1 male to hold, cuddle and admire… just don’t get too attached to these adorable pure-breds if you know what I mean *wink-wink*!

Never a dull moment covering Beach Drive.

Local dive serves up great seafood and heavy drinkers!

Just a couple hundred yards off Beach Drive lies one of the best little dives along the entire Alki strip. Locals would reefer to it as a a swim-up bar but most get to it by boat (want more puns?).

Known to most as the Alki Rock Pile, this site also goes by Alki Reef, Jacobson Fishing Reef or Fish Haven (as noted on marine charts). Several popular dive sites on the web incorrectly state that this man-made reef was one of the original 13 artificial reefs created in Puget Sound in the mid 1970's by Washington Dept of Fish and Wildlife. It was actually created in May of 1987 as a "mitigation reef" to offset the ecological damage created when developing the Elliott Bay Marina.

Mitigation_reef

The idea was to carefully construct a reef which would provide an assemblage of economically important fish species similar to, or greater than, the impacted habitat.

A scientific study used to measure the effectiveness of the reef in 1989 described how it was built…

"A total of 181,400 metric tons of quarry rock was used to construct fourteen 41 m· 15 m· 6 m (high) reef structures in a 2.83 ha area during May 1987. This design of a 1:2 ratio of reef material: sand bottom also accommodated the trophic level relationships normally occurring for fishes feeding from reef structures and surrounding natural habitats."

While researching this particular reef on the internet, I found that it has become a reference point for building artificial reefs worldwide.

Today marks the opening day for Ling cod fishing which will attract several boats fishing the reef in May.

Divers get their shot of these lunkers in the 3rd week in May

I'll end this fish story with a great video of a couple of divers that were escorted from Emma Schmitz Viewpoint to the reef by a "true local". Turn up your speakers and enjoy!

Halloween on Beach Drive

We spied this bone-chilling house on the 4800 block of Beach Drive the other day. DSC01277

With Halloween just a few days away, it would be spooktacular to share photos of your haunted Beach Drive homes, ghoulish carved pumpkins and spooky pets dressed in costumes on the blog.  Email us your photos before Halloween!
