Homes Burglerized on Beach Drive

Just learning via email this morning of a couple burgurlies that recently happened around the 5600 block area of Beach Drive:

The house next door was broken into night before last-it had been empty due to the owner moving back and forth to her new residence. Now we hear that the house 2 doors away from hers was also burglarized.  If I get any more details I will alert you.

Car Damaged by Vandal on Beach Drive

Sometime last night or this morning someone through a baseball sized rock through the back of a Volvo SUV on the 4700 block of Beach Drive.   It does not appear any items were stolen.

If you witnessed anything or if this happened to you as well, please send us an email.

UPDATE:  Apparently a couple of other cars were vandalized on Beach Drive too.   I also read in the West Seattle Blog forums that someone noticed 6 cars struck by vandals on Beach Drive.

September 27, 2010 at 10:15 am ~ Update (via Twitter):  the reward has been increased to $1,000.  (The title of this post has been updated as well).

Car Break-in on Beach Drive: Please Watch for Duffel Bags

This just in from a neighbor who lives on Beach Drive:

Last Friday my son was packing the car to leave for college. Most everything was stolen while we went back up to the house.

  • Two very large duffel bags
  • Two soccer bags
  • An dark canvas type tool bag
  • Guitar
  • Small duffel over gaming stuff.

It is likely that we will not see any of it again, but the duffels of use clothes might be left in the park or on the street somewhere. So please that us know.

If you happen to see large duffel bags or clothing that has been "dumped", please contact me and I'll forward the message.

Please check your dumpsters if you live in a condo or apartment.

Potential Attempted Break In

We received this email today about a potential break-in on Beach Drive around the 4600 block:

Apparently, the perpetrator knocked on the front door and  when there was no answer he went through the gate and entered the backyard. There he rattled the back door by the master bedroom. Our neighbor went to the front door and when no one was there and her dog was barking she went to the back door by the kitchen, saw a man at her master bedroom door and asked him what he was doing and he took off up the bank and climbed over their fence to another neighbor's yard.

Our neighbor called 911 and described the perpetrator as a young man, dark hair, approx 20 something, about 6 ft tall, medium build, ponytail, black cap, white hoodie sweatshirt, black pants.

Luckily, no harm done……eyes wide open!

Great reminder about having a Block Watch (what if the neighbor wasn't home) and the upcoming Seattle's Night Out in August.

Low Tide plus Sunny Day = the Moon Snail Poacher (or is she just harvesting)

She's back stocking her bag full.   I first noticed her collecting shells on Emma Schmitz Park, however she has since moved south to private property along Beach Drive.

This person is frequently along these shores illegally harvesting moon snail shells.   Here's a link to a previous post with more information about the violation and who to call when you see poaching.

People who have lived in this area for a long time will tell you how the shores used to be stocked with shells.  Harvesting, especially someone as active and consistant as this lady, has diminished this sea-life.

Let's hope she's not selling this to a restaurant.

Update 12:30: check out her full bag of loot…and she's still looking for more.

Update 1:30 pm.   Another concerned neighbor contacted the SPD who did meet this lady on the beach.  This is out of the SPD's jurisdiction however she did cooperate and show the Officer that all of the shells are empty.   He instructed her to contact the Fish and Wildlife Department to confirm whether or not removing empty moon snail shells from a marine reserve is legal.

We hope to do a follow up post on whether or not the removal of empty shells from Emma Schmitz (or a marine reserve) is legal.

She’s Back…Harvesting a Giant Bag of Moon Shells

Harvesting shells from this area is a crime.   She's been on private property doing this as well as Emma Schmitz which is a Marine Reserve…this is not her first occurance (she's the same person photo'd in this post).

Beach Drive Break In’s Last Night?

I'm hearing from a friend that on Friday night there were:

"two buildings on Beach Drive that I know of that were broken into last night with the use of force and prying on lobby door knobs"

Does anyone have more information on this?   At the very least it's a good reason to be extra alert.  If you have more information, please let us know.

Night Time Clam Poaching?

Did anyone notice a couple of people on the beach last night around 10ish with what appeared to be clam shovels and big buckets, digging by a lantern?

This (poor) photo was taken along the beach in front of Emma Schmitz Park.   Shellfish in this area are toxic and the beach is a City of Seattle and a Washington State Fish and Marine Wildlife Preserve–removing anything from this area is illegal.

Earlier this year, West Seattle Blog reported on illegal clam digging in this area where the poachers were caught harvesting hundreds of clams.

I'm hoping this something else other than what it appeared to be on a dark December night with a very low tide.   Did you see anything?

Another Home Impacted by Crime on Beach Drive

We just received this email:

"I…saw the recent crime activity right around our houses on the Beach Drive Blog. Yesterday morning, I discovered that someone had dug up a metal light at the end of our driveway and placed it right behind my husband's car in our driveway. This took some effort to do, as the light was heavy and attached to electrical wiring. I wanted to let you know, as I think we should all try to be extra vigilant about crime in our area."

The Seattle Police non-emergency number to report a crime is 206-625-5011.   It's important to call events like this in.
