Got stale corn chips? Fee-e-e-e-e-ed the Goats!

Well it looks like the off-again/on-again feeder for the goats off Jacobsen Street is officially gone. We have not had chance to chat with owners to learn why the feeder is down. They do have a sign that welcomes all to feed the lovely goats their favorite snack, corn chips, and to keep visiting Bama, JJ and Deli. The bell is gone too…my hunch is that one of the neighbors wasn’t too happy with it. However, if you call the goats names and give a few hearty “ba-a-a-a-ah”s, they will make their way up the hill to visit you and enjoy any snacks you have to offer.

Instead of throwing our old chips, crackers or tortillas into the yard waste, we’re keeping them for our neighborhood goats.

Aren’t they cute!

A message from the Seal Sitters

We just received this notice of a seal pup along with a reminder of what to do when you spot a seal pup.

Hi, Rhonda.

I was hoping you might be able to get the word out that Seal Sitters is on the lookout for a very thin harbor seal pup who is using private shoreline along Beach Drive to rest. Yesterday, the pup was in the 5900 block. With such a high tide last evening the pup likely was forced back into the Sound, however, may have sought shelter on a cement ramp or stairs along there.

If you see a pup, please stay well back and contact our hotline immediately at 206-905-SEAL (7325). It may be this pup, Tigger, who was first sighted and protected at Lincoln Park on Sunday morning (you can read our blubberblog post here: http://blubberblog.org/files/c9829896053c3c3c0807550ce5eb1f43-606.html).

Yesterday evening, we rescued a different terribly thin pup along Beach Drive who had numerous bite wounds to the head, neck and body. This is the SECOND bite wound pup we have had in the past few weeks along the stretch of beach from Lincoln Park to Emma Schmitz, all notorious for off-leash dogs. While we do not know for sure yet what animal inflicted the wounds, it is a fact that dogs maul seal pups – sometimes resulting in death – every year in Puget Sound. We are pleading with dog owners to please refrain from letting their dog onto the beach – especially unleashed and unaccompanied by owner.

This is the height of  harbor seal pupping season in our area and newly-weaned (along with a few still nursing-age) pups will be trying to rest on West Seattle beaches for the upcoming months. These weaners are most always quite thin and vulnerable. Each day is truly a life and death struggle for them. Please report any harbor seal you see resting on the beach, private or public – dead or alive.

And please remember it is against Federal law (Marine Mammal Protection Act) to touch, move or feed a seal pup. Yesterday evening, a well-intentioned soul wrapped the second Beach Drive pup in a towel, which can cause brain damage and death to a pup as he tries to regulate his body temperature and overheats. The pup was taken to rehab last night and we will keep you posted on the pup’s condition.

If you see a pup on your beach, always stay back, keep dogs away and call our hotline and a trained – and NOAA-authorized – first responder will be there shortly.

Thanks so much to all of you for your help!

The “Justin” rides again!

I had to rub my eyes a few times but confirmed via AIS what I saw out in the Straits of Jaun de Fuca. it was the same 1950’s army landing craft that had sunk off the shores of Beach Drive in late 2011.

She looked as good as new cruising south towards Admiralty inlet. Her current position appears to be in Lake Union according to MarineTraffic.Com.

JustinLUPlease join me in wishing Justin calm, safe seas for the rest of her career.

Check out the back door on these 100 year olds!

While 2013 featured only one Beach Drive home (and a lighthouse) turning 100, this year needs enough candles for a half-dozen! Check ’em out…

An extensive remodel in 2009 but the bones are unmistakably 1914. Being nestled right up against Emma Schmitz Memorial Overlook, I’m pretty certain it witnessed some pretty swank Schmitz parties!

Farewell, SV Hot Potato

Yesterday, around 1:45 pm the SPD returned to where the (assumed) abandoned sailboat was temporarily anchored.

Thanks to BD neigbhor, Jeri, for sending us this photo of the “SV Hot Potato” being towed away by the SPD.

Voyage of the sv Hot Potato

Making headlines for the second straight day on BDB, folks on the 5000 block of Beach Drive woke up to the un-named/registered 26 foot sailing vessel anchored out in front of their views.

IMG_2995

You ask how you could be so blessed to have this blue tarped boat swaying near your buoys?? Seems it was towed there by what looked like the Seattle Harbor Patrol! We first noticed the sailboat several days ago anchored out front of Weather Watch Park but recently noticed it was leap frogging south about a hundred yards or so during every flood tide. Here’s how it unfolded yesterday…

1:00 PM – The head honcho of BDB makes a call to the Coast Guard to alert them of an unsecured vessel. They pass her onto Seattle Harbor Patrol which in turn passes the buck to King County which in turn tells her to contact the Coast Guard… well, see a pattern here? Nobody wants responsibility to tow or secure the boat.

6:15 PM – The 26′ “Hot Potato” floats off it’s anchor heading out towards the shipping channel

8:00 PM – Near miss! A container ship heading north almost sends Hot Potato down to Davy Jone’s locker for good.

Approx 9:15 PM – A patrol boat with blue lights flashing is seen towing said vessel southward towards which we thought might be Des Moines or Tacoma.

Some good news for our Beach Drive neighbors is that 2 notices have been neatly taped to the aft cabin of Hot Potato. One of which reads Notice of Intent to Obtain Custody. It’s one of the first steps in disposing derelict vessels in an environmentally responsible way and, not to mention, allows time for the rightful owner to step forward.

(b) Before taking temporary possession of the vessel, the authorized public entity must make reasonable attempts to consult with the department or the United States coast guard to ensure that other remedies are not available. The basis for taking temporary possession of the vessel must be set out in writing by the authorized public entity within seven days of taking action and be submitted to the owner, if known, as soon thereafter as is reasonable. If the authorized public entity has not already provided the required notice, immediately after taking possession of the vessel, the authorized public entity must initiate the notice provisions in subsection (1) of this section. The authorized public entity must complete the notice requirements of subsection (1) of this section before using or disposing of the vessel as authorized in RCW 79.100.050.

In other news, wouldn’t you think they could find a more visible location for this sign?

Do you know the owner of this sailboat?

This 20 – 25 foot sail boat (similar to a Thunderbird style boat) appears to be drifting.

We first noticed this boat closer to Weather Watch Park. We are not sure if it broke anchor or is dragging anchor. The boat is currently off the shores of Emma Schmitz View Point (approx 4600 Beach Drive).

A couple of notices have been posted on the vessel, which appears to be unoccupied.  If you, or someone you know, is the captain of this boat, please let them know it’s gone adrift!

The authorities have been notified.

Can you hear me now on Beach Drive??

If you you were wondering why someone was holding a pole along Beach Drive in 90+ heat…

I’m thinking she drew the short straw while her co-worker is driving all air-conditioned around the Beach Drive vicinity taking reception readings for Verizon Cellular.

Poor cell reception comes up pretty often in conversatio…tion… arou…nd here. Good to see Verizon taking action!

Filming near Mee Kwa Mooks Park

Right now a commercial for Wave Broadband is being filmed near Mee Kwa Mooks with an undisclosed star. Our intrepid Scupper says his lips are sealed… yet puckered, regarding the identity of the actress.
