The Brown House by Emma Schmitz Park

Brown_house_2It appears that this house will soon be two.    BDB first reported on it back in April as the beginning of a "before and after" home series on tear downs.

If you have a house in your neighborhood on Beach Drive that is tagged as a tear down, snap a photo and email it to me.    I think it’s important to document "what once was".

This poor house has been abandoned (at least we hope no one was living there) for so long.   I think the last big storm blew out the window in the back which now has broken glass and propped up mattresses to keep critters out.

Hat Tip to West Seattle Blog for their Land Use Updates.

Enter "beach dr" to see other properties along Beach Drive that are hoping to change their land use designation.

Welcome Home John

I can’t imagine what it would look like as the USS John C. Stennis is escorted along Bainbridge Island.

Did you hear the fireworks?

This afternoon, three loud blast happened around Emma Schmitz Park.   Guess I’m not the only one who heard it.Dsc_0117_3  What would possess someone to light off fireworks (check out the white pipe at their feet) in the middle of the afternoon at the end of August?

Gone fishing

I had the honor of watching a couple of Osprey fishing today.

Beach Drive Block Watch Update and Neighbor List

NOTE:  I’ve been duking it out with Comcast who has wrongly dumped my emails into their nasty spam category.   I do a lot of email with my "real job".   Because of Comcast, I have not been able to send this message out to neighbors…my apologies.
Hello Neighbor!
If you’re receiving this email, it could mean a couple of things:
  1. You asked to be included on updates regarding the block watch
  2. You attended the Seattle Night Out event on Angeline Street earlier this month
  3. Somehow we have your email address on the neighbor list on www.beachdriveblog.com.
If you do not want to be on the list or to receive Block Watch information, please reply with "remove" in the subject line and I will do so without any further questions.
If you do not want to be on the Beach Drive Neighbor List, please send me an email requesting to be removed (again–no problem).
Please do visit www.beachdriveblog.com and click on the Beach Drive Neighbors link on the left side of the page.   This is private list that requires a login and password.   (Please contact me and if you’re on the list, I’ll provide you with the login/password).
Please take a moment to review your info and make sure it’s correct.   I’ve done my best…but I’m far from perfect!   If you’re not on there and would like to be, please let me know.
I have scheduled a Block Watch meeting with our area representative from the SPD (even though they were a no-show at our gathering for Seattle Night Out).
This is scheduled for Tuesday, September 18 at 6:30 pm. (this is post poned)  I’m not sure WHERE it’s going to be!  Alyson has gernerously offered her nice lot on Angeline again.
Please let me know the following:
1)  Are you interested in participating in a Block Watch?
2)  Are you interested in hosting the meeting at your home?
I would also like to take this moment to thank my neighbors, Natalie and Susan D. for helping to pass out flyers for the Seattle Night Out event and a BIG thank you to Alyson and our neighbors on Angeline who hosted the event on their street and Alyson’s yard.   I think it was a success and I look forward to the event next year.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Got Milk?

MilkNeighbor Alyson (she’s the nice lady that allowed everyone in her yard during Seattle Night Out earlier this month) would like you to know this about Scott the Milkman:

"We signed up for Smith Brothers milk delivery a couple months ago. We love it but know that Scott our milkman is going a couple blocks out of his way to deliver to us so it would be great if any one in the surrounding houses signed up for delivery. Smith Brothers offer a wide range of products. For bargain shoppers the best deal is the milk and eggs, both are hormone free, not organic but "hormone free." For the non coupon/sale shopper what is better than milk, ice cream, coffee, cheese, juice, yogurt, etc delivered to your door every Tuesday. A minimum order of one gallon of milk is required, the milk box is supplied and there are no other expenses then the price of the products. We love the convenience and the taste."

Scott the Milkman can be reached by calling his voice mail: 253-351-2502.

The Breast Cancer 3-Day Marathon along Beach Drive

Left_splash_logo

On Sunday, September 9 from 7:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. we will witness a sea of pink as marathoners parade down Beach Drive to support breast cancer.  The Breast Cancer 3-Day is probably one of the largest events for breast cancer (at least that I’m aware of).    The marathons walk on average 20 miles a day to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer.

Our neighborhood is Day 3 of this event and this is a wonderful opportunity to pull up a lawn chair and cheer these ladies and gentlemen on.

"Cheering Stations are a great way to show your support along the route to encourage participants and let them know that you are with them every step of the way. Seeing familiar faces cheering them on can provide that extra burst of energy that gets them to take that next step or go the next mile. Create banners, hold up signs, bring some music and make some noise – anything to make them smile, get energized and keep walking. Note: The “Last Chance Cheering Station” (on Day 3) is your last chance to see your walkers before you are reunited with them at Closing Ceremonies."

The Last Chance Cheering Station is at Alki Beach.

So many lives are touched by this disease, let’s get out and show our support!

I’m seeing red

One red tomato.  This has been my first experience in growing tomatoes and I can’t wait to try eating one!    I simply love my tomatoes from the garden, is there anything better?

Note to self: buy a tomato cage next time.   This thing is growing all over the patio!

Spuds vs. Sunfish. Who has the best fish and chips?

The Seattle P&I reports that their readers recommend Sunfish for some of the best fish & chips around:

"Far and away the best fish ‘n’ chips in the city is Sunfish Seafood (2800 Alki Ave. S.W., Seattle). Once we found this place, we stopped our quest for the best." Jeff Ellis, Seattle

Personally, I agree.   Although when our family is at Sunfish, I typically order the seafood skewers which have halibut, prawns and veggies grilled perfectly over a basket of nummy fries.

During the Alki Hot Rod Show was the last time I was at Sunfish.   My husband and I ordered our skewers "to go" and sat in the grass overlooking the cars.   A participant, not from West Seattle, asked me "Wow, did you get that at Spuds?" and I told him "No.  I like Sunfish better".    He kind of scoffed at me like I didn’t know what I was talking about.    It has been a while since I’ve been to Spuds (years).   If I recall, it was a little too greasy for my taste…when I was a teen I probably would have loved it.

What is your favorite fish & chip restaurant?

No Alki Community Council meeting tonight

What are you going to do with all of your free time?
