It Must Be Opening Day of Boating Season

My guess is they're fishing for ling cod.

Squid?

Through my telescope, I thought I saw a squid during today's very low tide.

You can see how his tenticle goes beyond the lady's right foot.  My hubby thinks it's just a starfish…but through the telescope, this really appeared to look more like a squid.

Did anyone else see this today?

Where the Water Begins: Free Workshop from the King Conservation District

The King Conservation District is holding a series of free workshops for property owners along the marine shorelines and bluffs of King County.   Beach Drive has plenty of waterfront and bluff homes that have faced recent potential issues with mud slides.

The workshop will provide an opportunity to learn about the ecological, geological and vegetation management issues associated with owning waterfront property.

Topics will include:

  • Understanding marine near-shore and riparian ecology
  • Recognizing geologic hazards
  • Using native vegetation to reduce erosion and to improve fish and wildlife habitat

Who should attend:

  • Beach property owners interested in a stable natural shoreline
  • Bluff property owners interested in reducing the potential for erosion and landslides
  • Any marine shoreline or bluff property owner interested in improving fish and wildlife habitat.

When and where:

All workshops are from 9:00 am – 12:30 pm (indoor session) and 12:30 – 3:30 pm (optional pre-order boxed lunch $12 and field trip).

Facilitators:

  • Kollin Higgins, King County DNRP WLRD
  • Peter Landry, City of Normand Park
  • Elliott Menashe, Greenbelt Consulting
  • Brandy Reed, Conservation District

Whats Up with the Fire Department in the Puget Sound off Beach Drive Shores?

I've noticed some unusal activity with the Seattle Fire Department (I think?) in the Puget Sound around the Emma Schmitz Viewpoint area.  I'm assuming that they're just practicing water rescue but I'm not sure…thought I'd see if any of our readers have the inside scoop or if you've noticed the same.

April 19 was the first time I noticed this as they tied to our buoy.

About a week ago, the Leschi Fire Rescue Boat spent some time around the same spot.

Yesterday, around 10 am in the morning, two dinghy's went to around where the orange buoy is to do some diving.

Just looked out the window….they're diving right now!

Beach Drive Blog is now on Twitter

First Facebook…and now Twitter.

Twitter is pretty amazing…basically, you have 140 characters to say something and post it.  Each post (or "tweet") is posted on the web and actually becomes it's own url or web page.

It's amazing how viral Twitter is.   Our plan so far with Twitter is to use it to promote posts, share things that might be too short & sweet for a post, and to "retweet" things of interest to our neighborhood.

If you have an account on Twitter (it's free) you can follow us at @beachdriveblog or go to www.twitter.com/beachdriveblog

Here's our first message on Twitter, which we received before we did our first tweet.

Bdbtweet
We have a live feed on the side panel of the blog…still toying around with if I'm going to keep both feeds or not… stay tuned.

B-Town Blog’s Candidates Forum

This is via a comment from Mark Neuman of the B-Town Blog:

I wanted to let you know about the B-Town (Burien) Blog's Candidates Forum featuring the four announced candidates for 34th District State Representative, Position 2.

The Candidates Forum is set for Tuesday April 27, 2010 at the Highline Performing Arts Center on SW 152nd next to Highline High School in Burien, just east of I-509. It'll run from 7pm to 8:30pm.

John Carlson of KVI and KOMO will serve as moderator. (John is originally from West Seattle, and actually ran for 34th District State Representative way back in the mid-80s).

All four announced candidates have agreed to participate:
Mike Heavey, Joe Fitzgibbon, Marcee Stone and Geoffrey "Mac" McElroy.

I am hoping you could forward this email to your Community Association mailing list and anyone else you think might be interested in attending.

Beach Drive Blog and Social Media

I’m pretty involved with various forms of social media personally and professionally.  I really enjoy the information and connections it provides.  With my lil’ ol’ neighborhood blog, Beach Drive Blog, I’ve pretty much stuck with just the blog.

Last year I added “Ning” which provides the community forums linked above.  Recently Ning has announced on their blog that they are going to start charging for their site in the next 10 weeks.  They have not announced fees yet and if it’s nominal, I may keep the Ning site…so far Beach Drive Blog only cost my time and energy.  Once I have more information, I’ll let you know what changes (if any) will take place.

Yesterday I created a Facebook Page for Beach Drive Blog.  If you’re on Facebook, I invite you to join our page and be a fan “like” us.

What else is brewing for Beach Drive Blog?  I would still love to have more neighbors contributing to the blog.  You can be a BDB Reporter, Author or Photographer–just send me an email and let me know you’re interested.   The more people we have participating, the more interesting the blog will be.  Plus, I don’t know what’s going on all the time along the neighborhood that spans Beach Drive.

How many of you are on Twitter?  You may have noticed that I’ve added a Twitter feed on the right side of this blog.  Currently it’s showing Seattle tides and what ever West Seattle blog is tweeting.   I may add more information to this feed and perhaps create a Twitter profile for Beach Drive Blog…are any of you on Twitter?  (If so, follow me @mortgageporter).

UPDATED: Meeting regarding the Murray Pump Station at Lowman Beach

Update April 23, 2010:  Read West Seattle Blog's coverage of the meeting here.   Be sure to read the comments which also contain a great deal of information.

Tonight at 7pm at the Morgan Community Association's quarterly meeting, the controversial discussion regarding Murray Pump Station continues.   West Seattle Blog has an update here. The meeting takes place in the basement of The Kenney at 7125 Fauntleroy Way SW, Seattle.

Some options to deal with the "combined sewer overflow" include:

  • digging up a majority of Lowman Beach Park
  • claiming some Beach Drive homes across from the park (via eminet domain)

Dr. Ron Sterling, author of West Seattle Sound Angels blog, states this is

"…the only meeting I am aware of that is scheduled to take place BEFORE King County submits it's plans for SEPA (State Environmental Policy Act) approval in June 2010…. Be there if you care!"
