Many Homes without Power along Beach Drive

Many homes are currently without power along the Beach Drive neighborhood following last night’s windstorm. Our weather system actually clocked a gust of 71 mph at 2:40 am. We didn’t lose power until around 7:30 this morning…about the time I thought we were out of the woods. As I write this (around noon), we are still one of the homes without power. I’m thankful that the temps are warmer and that it happened during the daytime.

It’s still gusty and there is a Small Craft Advisory in effect until 7pm tonight.

Barking Dog Report: Stormy Weather Ahead

HIGH WIND WARNING is now an hour earlier since our last update – starting at noon today with gusts up to 60 mph. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a wind warning that cautions people to stay in the lower levels of their home! (See below). The GALE WATCH has been elevated to a GALE WARNING, which means the weather is imminent.

Next high tides are 1:07 pm today at 9.6 feet and Tuesday morning at 4:18 am at 11.3 feet. The wee hours are when this storm may be the most impactful.

I’m issuing a “barking dog report” to give a heads up that those who live on the water may have some splashing water coming over their seawalls. If you’re a long-time reader of BDB, you know that a “barking dog report” is intended to be a helpful warning and hopefully, it’s much ado about nothing, like your neighbors barking dog.

* IMPACTS…Damaging winds will blow down trees and power lines. Widespread power outages are expected. Travel will be difficult, especially for high profile vehicles.

* PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS… People should avoid being outside in forested areas and around trees and branches. If possible, remain in the lower levels of your home during the windstorm, and avoid windows. Use caution if you must drive.

The tides that coincide with the potential winds starting on Monday are estimated at 9.60 feet at 1:07 pm, going down to -0.67 feet and then heading up to 11.30 feet at 4:18 am on Tuesday morning.

In my opinion, Tuesday morning in the wee hours may be the most exciting part of the storm; especially for those who are lucky enough to live on the west side of Beach Drive. It’s possible we could see some water splashing over seawalls if we have enough 40 mph gusts building up the waves.

If we see constant gusts in the 40’s from 4pm through early Tuesday, we could also potentially have some power outages. This Wind Alert graph is based on forecasted winds for the area around Alki Light House.

START OF THE ORIGINAL POST:

Based on current forecast from Wind Alert, we could have some spectacular weather coming up. Check this condensed view showing gusts hitting 50 mph on Monday and Tuesday.


Today’s forecasted wind peak with gusts estimated at 39 mph at 4:00 pm while the tide will be low (around 2.7 feet).

On Sunday, the forecasted wind peaks from around 5pm to 7pm, during low tides again. 😅


Monday (and Tuesday) is set to be another story as you saw from my teaser at the beginning of this post.


Of course, a lot can change between now and Monday and I’m using a blend of the available models on Wind Alert. If this is accurate, we may have gusts in the 40s from 4:00 pm Friday to 5 am Tuesday.

How about those tides? At 4:00 pm on Friday, tides are estimated to be around 6 feet and heading down to a low of -0.7 feet at 8:22 pm. The next high tide is estimated to be 11.30 feet at 4:18 am Tuesday when gusts are estimated in the 40’s from the southwest. We will be keeping a close eye on this.

We do have a flood watch in effect through late Tuesday for all the rain that’s in the forecast.

Neighbor Seeking Advice for their Seawall

A Beach Drive neighbor wants to repair their seawall as it has cracks and exposed rebar. They have been trying to get a permit for the last couple of years and have recently learned they will need to pay $50K to mitigate the impact to the environment.

Gale Warning and Wind Advisory until 4pm

You don’t need this blog to inform you that it’s windy this morning! Our weather station shows that we had a gust of 49.4 mph SE at around 7:25 a.m.
The next high tide is estimated 12.06 feet at 2:39 pm. Wind Alerts forecast looks like gusts may simmer down to around 35 mph at that time.

Just as we’re watching the end of the 49ers vs Rams game….poof! The power is out and we see a flash of light. Seattle City Light reports about 4900 out estimated power returning at 2am tomorrow. Just tell me the 49ers won?

Wind Advisory starting 2pm Tuesday

We could be set for some very windy weather starting tomorrow afternoon due to the bomb cyclone setting up in the Pacific. This snapshot from WindAlert shows possible gusts off Alki Point of up to 49 mph around 7pm. Typically, this would be a “barking dog” report for us except the wind is coming from the southeast instead of the southwest. The waves during this event should be heading away from our west-facing seawalls and beaches.


Although you may not have waves coming over during this potentially high wind event, we could see trees impacted. We lost a large chunk of our corkscrew willow from an easterly wind event a couple of years ago. We could also see power outages.

The National Weather Service issued a Wind Advisory this afternoon:

...WIND ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 2 PM TUESDAY TO 4 AM PST WEDNESDAY...

* WHAT...East to southeast winds 20 to 30 mph with gusts up to 50
  mph expected.

* WHERE...Portions of northwest and west central Washington.

* WHEN...From 2 PM Tuesday to 4 AM PST Wednesday.

* IMPACTS...Gusty winds could blow around unsecured objects. Tree
  limbs could be blown down and a few power outages may result.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Strongest winds will occur Tuesday evening
  into early Wednesday morning. Significant impacts may occur at
  lower-than-usual wind speeds due to the atypical easterly wind
  direction.

We do have some high tides, which should be spectacular to watch during this storm.
