Get Your Bras Ready

A little bird has told me that the Seattle Breast Cancer 3-Day will use the same route this year as they did last year.   This means the 3-Day’ers will be making the last day of their journey along Beach Drive and we have the opportunity to cheer them on!

I had a lot of fun last year just clapping and offering encouragement.   Other neighbors decorated and had bags of M&Ms and other goodies to support the marathoners in this great cause.

I lost a dear friend, Michelle Brown, to breast cancer last year; 2008 — I’m going to decorate my "cheer station" in her honor…she’ll love it from above.

This event takes place September 14, 2008.   More info to follow.

Extra 2008 Calendars

I ordered too many calendars for 2008.   They have a photo of Alki when the Statue of Liberty returned on September 11, 2007.   If you would like to have one…just let me know.   They are 8.5 x 11 with all months on the page with the color photo.

Seal playing games with a Kayaker

While some of us are getting ready to watch "the big game", a local seal (we call Bob) plays his own game with a kayaker.

When ever she would turn around, it seemed Bob would duck…a playful game of hide and seek.

Hang on to your Hats

It’s a breezy one this morning…not quite alarming enough for a "barking dog" report.  But  it is enough to stay alert and prepared.   Here’s the scoop for this morning:

High Tide is a 11.5 at 9:11 a.m.

Current Puget Sound Marine forecast:  …SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT THROUGH THIS EVENING…

TODAY…S WIND 15 TO 25 KT…BECOMING SW 20 TO 30 KT LATE THIS MORNING. WIND WAVES 2 TO 4 FT BUILDING TO 3 TO 5 FT. RAIN TURNING TO SHOWERS THIS MORNING.

The Beach Drive weather station is reporting winds currently at 33 mph with gusts up to 37 from the SSW.

Oh SHIP!

Late Sunday morning, my husband and I were just minding our own business when I looked out our window and noticed a large cargo ship very close in towards Beach Drive and moving very quickly (I was not able to catch a photo).   The views from the condos on Beach Drive and by the light house must have been amazing!    Dsc_0020

For the heck of it, we hopped in our car to see what was up.   We’ve never seen a fully loaded boat that size come in from Tacoma and make a bee line to Seattle.   Following the vessel we wound up discovering Jack Block Park.  We have driven the park many times, but have never checked it out until today.

From there, we ventured out to Harbor Island trying to avoid the remote control trains and to learn more about the Hyundai Republic (we wanted to be able to read the name on the boat).

From Terminal 18 Park, we were able to clearly read the name of the ship that cruised by this morning.   We also learned that Harbor Island was once the largest man made island in the world.   According to the plaque at the park, it was started unknowingly by ships dropping their ballast overboard prior to 1895.   Dredging and earth from the Jackson and Dearborn street regrades was also used to create Harbor Island.

A little research revealed that the Hyundai Republic was scheduled for arrival at the Port of Tacoma on January 25 and not at the Port of Seattle
