With the first high tide of 11.3 at 7:10 a.m. with low tide of -1.4 following at 2:00 pm and the next high tide of 11.2 at 9:06 pm… I think I'm going to call this my first official "Barking Dog" report.  (If you're new to BDB, consider a "Barking Dog Report" like your neighbors dog who's yapping when they're a bit concerned — all with good intentions).

The forecast that I've linked to are updated so please be sure to check back.

Update 4/1/10 6:45 am:  here's a link to the National Weather Service which has a high wind watch for Seattle.

Blustery Morning on Beach Drive

We're past this morning's high tide of 12.0 feet which happened a few minutes before 5:00 am.   Tides are heading down to a 1.1 low at 11:15 am this afternoon and back up to an 11.2 at 5:24 this evening.

Combine the tides with the very windy weather and it makes for some great storm watching.   It looks like there's even a chance of thunderstorms.

City of Seattle Forecast:

Wild Wind and Waves

I'm hoping that the wind today is not enough to justify a "barking dog report" and that it's only entertaining.    Our next high tide isn't until 2:43 pm and is a 9.2.

The current Seattle City Forecast states:

TODAY…BECOMING WINDY MIDDAY. RAIN TURNING TO SHOWERS. HIGHS IN THE UPPER 40S TO MID 50S. SOUTHEAST WIND 10 TO 15 MPH SHIFTING TO SOUTH 20 TO 30 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 45 MPH MIDDAY.

TONIGHT…SHOWERS LIKELY. WINDY THIS EVENING. LOWS IN THE 30S. SOUTH WIND 20 TO 30 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 45 MPH EARLY…EASING TO 10 TO 15 MPH DURING THE EVENING.

The Puget Sound Marine Forecast:

…SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT…

TONIGHT…S WIND 20 TO 30 KT. WIND WAVES 3 TO 5 FT. SHOWERS LIKELY.

At last check, the Beach Drive weather station is logging in gusts of 35mph SSW.

Oh No–Chance of Snow?

I'm hoping it's a case of the local news doing their best to add drama to our weather forcast.  King 5 is reporting that:

It is possible there could be a few wet snowflakes mixed in with the rain in heavier showers, but no accumulations at sea level!

Whew!!  Regardless if we have snow or not–it is going to get very chilly tonight.  The Seattle City Forecast reports:

Tonight: LOWS IN THE UPPER 20S TO MID 30S

Tuesday night:  LOWS IN THE 30S TO LOWER 40S

Things should be more "normal" later this week.

Bundle up and let's hope Mother Nature isn't full of surprises!

I'll be moving my humming bird feeders off the back deck…this could be a good time to make sure you have things that can launch (portable heaters, umbrella's, etc) secured.

Barking Dog Report

Istock_000002610704medium_1 It's been a while since I've issued a "Barking Dog Report" so for those of you new to Beach Drive Blog, a "Barking Dog Report" is when we feel there may be some issues caused by wind, high tides/big waves where you might have to dig out your extra pumps to protect  your property.  Hopefully a "barking dog report" is no different than your neighbor's yappin' dog just looking out for everybody…it doesn't hurt to be prepared.  We assume no liability whether or whether not the weather whammo's us… we are just sharing our concern and/or alert level… with that said… (lights are flickering as I write this so I'm publishing as I post).

Here is the current Puget Sound Marine Forecast (click for updates–they do change).  I must admit…if I see up to 5 ft waves…I'm leaning towards posting a BDR…especially SW winds.

…SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT THROUGH SATURDAY AFTERNOON…

TONIGHT…SW WIND 15 TO 25 KT. WIND WAVES 2 TO 4 FT. SHOWERS AND SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS.

SAT…S WIND 15 TO 25 KT…BECOMING SW 20 TO 30 KT IN THE AFTERNOON. WIND WAVES 2 TO 5 FT. SHOWERS AND SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS.

SAT NIGHT…S WIND 10 TO 20 KT. WIND WAVES 1 TO 3 FT. SHOWERS AND CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS IN THE EVENING…THEN CHANCE OF SHOWERS AFTER MIDNIGHT.

SUN…S WIND 10 TO 20 KT. WIND WAVES 1 TO 3 FT.

SUN NIGHT…S WIND 15 TO 25 KT RISING TO 20 TO 30 KT AFTER MIDNIGHT. WIND WAVES 2 TO 5 FT.

Oh hail! Here's the forecast for the City of Seattle:

TONIGHT…BREEZY. SHOWERS AND SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS. SOME THUNDERSTORMS MAY PRODUCE SMALL HAIL. LOWS 40 TO 45. SOUTHWEST WIND 15 TO 25 MPH.

SATURDAY…BREEZY. SHOWERS AND SCATTERED THUNDERSTORMS. SOME THUNDERSTORMS MAY PRODUCE SMALL HAIL. HIGHS NEAR 50. SOUTH WIND 15 TO 25 MPH.

So… our next high tide is an 11.7 at 8:56 tomorrow morning.  The tide only goes down to a 7.7 at 2:29 pm and then back up to a 9.7 at 6:35 pm.

Again, nothing guaranteed with Mother Nature…just consider this a report from your neighbors friendly concerned barking dog.  May be something…maybe not.

Wild Windy Weather

Our lights have been flickering every once in a while and I'm seeing via Twitter that parts of Queen Anne and Magnolia have had power outages.   West Seattle Blog reports a tree is down in The Junction.

Luckily we have low tides right now or we would probably be issuing a "barking dog report" warning of potential significant water issues that are a part of living on Beach Drive.   Our local weather station on Beach Drive has reported wind gusts up to 46 mph tonight.   Weather like this serves as an excellent reminder to make sure you're prepared for big storms.

Here's the current report from the City of Seattle:

TONIGHT…WINDY. RAIN THIS EVENING…THEN SHOWERS LIKELY AFTER MIDNIGHT. LOWS IN THE 40S. SOUTH WIND 20 TO 30 MPH BECOMING SOUTHWEST 15 TO 20 MPH AFTER MIDNIGHT.

FRIDAY…SHOWERS AND A CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS. HIGHS IN THE UPPER 40S TO MID 50S. SOUTH WIND 15 TO 20 MPH.

FRIDAY NIGHT…RAIN. LOWS IN THE 40S. SOUTH WIND 10 TO 20 MPH.

And the Puget Sound Marine Forecast:

…SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT THROUGH FRIDAY EVENING…

TONIGHT…S WIND 20 TO 30 KT…BECOMING SW 15 TO 25 KT AFTER MIDNIGHT. WIND WAVES 3 TO 5 FT…SUBSIDING TO 2 TO 4 FT. RAIN IN THE EVENING…THEN SHOWERS AND CHANCE OF TSTMS AFTER MIDNIGHT.

FRI…S WIND 15 TO 25 KT. WIND WAVES 2 TO 4 FT. SHOWERS AND CHANCE OF TSTMS.

FRI NIGHT…S WIND 15 TO 25 KT. WIND WAVES 2 TO 4 FT. RAIN IN THE EVENING. SHOWERS AND CHANCE OF TSTMS AFTER MIDNIGHT.

Our next high tide is an 11.9 at 8:00 tomorrow morning following a very low -2.8 at 12:30 am tonight (okay, technially tomorrow morning).   The tides will reach a low point of 7.8 at 1:24pm tomorrow and then up to a 10.4 at 5:58 pm.

Barge off Beach Drive this morning…and upcoming blustery weather

Thanks to Jan who sent in these photos this morning (sorry I didn't have a chance to post until now):

"the barge is picking up a shovel that was crating a rip-rap to strengthen a bulkhead a few doors down from us".

This could be good timing if you check ahead to the weather with a small craft advisory for tomorrow for the Puget Sound.  This from the Marine Forecast:

TUE…SE WIND 15 TO 25 KT. WIND WAVES 2 TO 4 FT. CHANCE OF RAIN.

TUE NIGHT…SE WIND 15 TO 25 KT. WIND WAVES 2 TO 4 FT. RAIN.

WED THROUGH SAT…SE WIND 15 TO 25 KT. WIND WAVES 2 TO 4 FT

Wednesday afternoon, the City of Seattle forecast currently states that we may experience wind gusts up to 40 miles per hour.

WEDNESDAY…RAIN IN THE MORNING…THEN MOSTLY CLOUDY WITH SCATTERED SHOWERS. BREEZY. HIGHS NEAR 60. SOUTH WIND 15 TO 25 MPH WITH LOCAL GUSTS TO 40 MPH.

Tuesday's high tide is an 11. 1 at 2:25 in the afternoon and Wednesday's is a 11.3 at 3:02.

Update:  here are more photos from Jan–thanks!

Is the Endless Summer Over?

DSC_0041

After Monday, you may wonder where summer has gone… looks like we're in for more "typical" fall weather with cloudy skies, wind and rain.   I'm enjoying the sunshine while it's hear.

Have a great weekend!

A Blustery Bumbershoot…Bummer!

P9060009 The other day, I joked on Twitter "What do you call three days of rain followed by a sunny Tuesday?  Labor Day in Seattle".    It's proving to be true.  Yesterday concert go-ers lucked out with sunshine for most of the day–no luck seems to be in the forecast today:

From the City of Seattle Forecast:

TODAY…BREEZY. SHOWERS AND A CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS. HIGHS IN THE UPPER 50S TO MID 60S. SOUTH WIND 15 TO 25 MPH.

TONIGHT…SHOWERS LIKELY. LOWS AROUND 50. SOUTHWEST WIND 10 TO 20 MPH.

Puget Sound – Marine Forecast (since I'm posting weather):

…SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT THROUGH THIS EVENING…

TODAY…S WIND 10 TO 20 KT RISING TO 20 TO 30 KT THIS AFTERNOON. WIND WAVES 1 TO 3 FT BUILDING TO 3 TO 5 FT THIS AFTERNOON. SHOWERS AND A CHANCE OF TSTMS.

TONIGHT…SW WIND 15 TO 25 KT. WIND WAVES 2 TO 4 FT. SHOWERS.

The tides look like they're working in our favor of avoiding having to do a "barking dog report" warning of potential weather issues with a low tide of 2.4 at 12:32 this afternoon and a high tide of 11.2 at 6:44 pm.

West Seattle Blog suggests we check storm drains–good idea!   This also may serve as a reminder to make sure you are prepared for Mother Nature when she's really feeling stormy.

Sounds like a good night to hunker down and maybe make some soup.  What are your plans?
