BREAKING NEWS! Sunshine Predicted in Seattle for Saturday and Sunday

Theron Zahn from KOMO-4 is broadcasting off Mee Kwa Mooks Park and Beach Drive covering Seattle's recent and pending weather.  I had a few moments to interview him where he predicted a beautiful sunny day for Saturday.  Sunday will start off a little grey with a marine overcast which should burn off.   Note that it's sunny enough for shadows in the picture!

Neighbors, I hope you have a wonderful sunny weekend–we're all due!

Talk’n about Gale & Stormy

Ok, settle down you old salty dogs, these aren't the fair-weather countersunk sailors you see sunning themselves on the decks of 50 ft. sailboats.  We're talking about weather classifications.

We hear the terms "small craft warnings" or it's "blowing a gale" often enough to take a  more detailed look at what these terms really mean as far as wind speed and water conditions. Let's start with small craft warnings.

There are no exact definitions for small craft warning and therefore is subjective to the local marine area.  Let's call it lower 20 to just over 30 mph winds where my neighbor Pat may want to delay his standing paddle surfing gig for another day.  You could  expect  2-4  foot waves  with white caps out on the sound for at least a couple of hours.

When neighbor Jeff tells his wife "simmer down Agnes", there's usually a gale predicted to blow on www.beachdriveblog. You can expect winds in the lower 30 to upper 40 mph range. Waves come in at 4 to 6 feet commonly sending spray onto Beach Drive over Emma Schmitz park.

I'm currently in a dense fog of creeping crud caught from my sons that brought it in from high school…

With the first high tide of 11.3 at 7:10 a.m. with low tide of -1.4 following at 2:00 pm and the next high tide of 11.2 at 9:06 pm… I think I'm going to call this my first official "Barking Dog" report.  (If you're new to BDB, consider a "Barking Dog Report" like your neighbors dog who's yapping when they're a bit concerned — all with good intentions).

The forecast that I've linked to are updated so please be sure to check back.

Update 4/1/10 6:45 am:  here's a link to the National Weather Service which has a high wind watch for Seattle.

Blustery Morning on Beach Drive

We're past this morning's high tide of 12.0 feet which happened a few minutes before 5:00 am.   Tides are heading down to a 1.1 low at 11:15 am this afternoon and back up to an 11.2 at 5:24 this evening.

Combine the tides with the very windy weather and it makes for some great storm watching.   It looks like there's even a chance of thunderstorms.

Wild Wind and Waves

I'm hoping that the wind today is not enough to justify a "barking dog report" and that it's only entertaining.    Our next high tide isn't until 2:43 pm and is a 9.2.

The current Seattle City Forecast states:

TODAY…BECOMING WINDY MIDDAY. RAIN TURNING TO SHOWERS. HIGHS IN THE UPPER 40S TO MID 50S. SOUTHEAST WIND 10 TO 15 MPH SHIFTING TO SOUTH 20 TO 30 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 45 MPH MIDDAY.

TONIGHT…SHOWERS LIKELY. WINDY THIS EVENING. LOWS IN THE 30S. SOUTH WIND 20 TO 30 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 45 MPH EARLY…EASING TO 10 TO 15 MPH DURING THE EVENING.

TONIGHT…S WIND 20 TO 30 KT. WIND WAVES 3 TO 5 FT. SHOWERS LIKELY.

At last check, the Beach Drive weather station is logging in gusts of 35mph SSW.

Oh No–Chance of Snow?

I'm hoping it's a case of the local news doing their best to add drama to our weather forcast.  King 5 is reporting that:

It is possible there could be a few wet snowflakes mixed in with the rain in heavier showers, but no accumulations at sea level!

Whew!!  Regardless if we have snow or not–it is going to get very chilly tonight.  The Seattle City Forecast reports:

Tonight: LOWS IN THE UPPER 20S TO MID 30S

Tuesday night:  LOWS IN THE 30S TO LOWER 40S

Things should be more "normal" later this week.

Bundle up and let's hope Mother Nature isn't full of surprises!
