Car Accident on Beach Drive Yesterday

Apparently one car managed to speed out of control and hit two other cars along Beach Drive just south of 61st.   I happened to be driving by after it happened and notified West Seattle Blog.   Here is their coverage of the accident.

People really need to slow down on Beach Drive.  I don't know that more speed bumps are the answer…I do know that we're lucky no pedestrians were injured.

No update on the driver.

Talk’n about Gale & Stormy

Ok, settle down you old salty dogs, these aren't the fair-weather countersunk sailors you see sunning themselves on the decks of 50 ft. sailboats.  We're talking about weather classifications.

We hear the terms "small craft warnings" or it's "blowing a gale" often enough to take a  more detailed look at what these terms really mean as far as wind speed and water conditions. Let's start with small craft warnings.

There are no exact definitions for small craft warning and therefore is subjective to the local marine area.  Let's call it lower 20 to just over 30 mph winds where my neighbor Pat may want to delay his standing paddle surfing gig for another day.  You could  expect  2-4  foot waves  with white caps out on the sound for at least a couple of hours.

When neighbor Jeff tells his wife "simmer down Agnes", there's usually a gale predicted to blow on www.beachdriveblog. You can expect winds in the lower 30 to upper 40 mph range. Waves come in at 4 to 6 feet commonly sending spray onto Beach Drive over Emma Schmitz park.

I'm currently in a dense fog of creeping crud caught from my sons that brought it in from high school…

The Future of Lowman Beach Park

LowmanBeachPark The West Seattle Blog has a must read article about what the county is proposing to do with the Lowman Beach with regards to the pumps, including:

….digging up most of Lowman Beach Park, including its unique beachfront tennis court and two century-old trees. Another would involve acquiring homes across the street from Lowman, through eminent domain if necessary.

It's a stinky situation and if you care about this area of West Seattle, I encourage to read WSB's post:  Turn Lowman Beach into a utility site?  Overflow options draw ire

Are You Missing a Yellow Buoy?

DSC_0247
This buoy seems to be snagged in the Puget Sound just south of Emma Schmitz Park (Jacobsen and Beach Drive).  It appears to be a buoy with a float.

Blustery Morning on Beach Drive

We're past this morning's high tide of 12.0 feet which happened a few minutes before 5:00 am.   Tides are heading down to a 1.1 low at 11:15 am this afternoon and back up to an 11.2 at 5:24 this evening.

Combine the tides with the very windy weather and it makes for some great storm watching.   It looks like there's even a chance of thunderstorms.

USS Nimitz (CVN 68) heading towards Bremerton

DSC_0275
I could barely spot the enormous USS Nimitz as I was walking my old pug moments ago along Beach Drive.

According to the Whidbey News Times, the Nimitz is bringing home Electronic Attack Squadron 135 "Black Ravens"

"The squadron is coming home after an eight-month combat deployment aboard USS Nimitz (CVN 68). Five EA-6B Prowlers and 20 aviators arrive at NAS Whidbey Island midday on Saturday. Then, on Sunday, 180 maintenance and support personnel will arrive at Naval Base Kitsap, stepping off USS Nimitz to waiting family and friends.

A Navy news release states the squadron left for deployment last July in support of joint and naval operations throughout Asia and the Middle East including Operation Enduring Freedom to provide electronic attack support for Carrier Air Wing 11 and ground forces."

Welcome home!
