NWS: Hazardous Weather Outlook referring to snow and hail the size of dimes!

Yikes – just noticed this from the National Weather Service.  Forecast can and do change… I hope this one does!

THIS HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK IS FOR THE INTERIOR LOWLANDS OF
WESTERN WASHINGTON.

.DAY ONE…TODAY AND TONIGHT

THE SNOW LEVEL WILL PLUMMET TO NEAR 500 FEET LATE TONIGHT BEHIND A VIGOROUS FRONT…RESULTING IN THE POTENTIAL FOR A DUSTING OR UP TO AN INCH OF SNOW IN PLACES ABOVE THE 500 FOOT LEVEL. THE SNOW SHOULD NOT STICK ON ANY OF THE ROADS AND IF IT DOES…IT SHOULD QUICKLY MELT.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN…THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY

THE AIR MASS WILL BECOME QUITE UNSTABLE ON THURSDAY…RESULTING IN
ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS WITH HAIL. THERE IS THE POSSIBILITY THAT
THE STRONGER THUNDERSTORMS COULD PRODUCE UP TO DIME SIZE HAIL OR
LARGE QUANTITIES OF HAIL ON THE GROUND. ANTICIPATE GRADUALLY
IMPROVING CONDITIONS THURSDAY NIGHT AND FRIDAY AS THE AIR MASS
STABILIZES AND HIGHER PRESSURE MOVES OVER THE REGION.

HIGH PRESSURE ALOFT WILL PREVAIL OVER THE AREA THIS WEEKEND FOR
DRIER AND WARMER WEATHER. ANOTHER LOW PRESSURE SYSTEM WILL BRING UNSETTLED CONDITIONS TO THE REGION MONDAY AND TUESDAY

Wind Advisory this Afternoon

2:20 pm update:  it looks like the wind advisory has been cancelled.   Here's the current forecast on NWS:

Tonight: Showers likely, mainly before 11pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 43. Breezy, with a southwest wind between 14 and 24 mph, with gusts as high as 37 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%

The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory for our area starting at noon and ending at 9:00 tonight.

* WINDS…RISING FROM THE SOUTH OR SOUTHWEST AT 20 TO 30 MPH WITH GUSTS NEAR 45 MPH.

* TIMING…WINDS WILL KICK UP BEHIND A FRONT THAT WILL SWEEP
ACROSS THE AREA THIS AFTERNOON. LOOK FOR WINDS TO GRADUALLY DIMINISH THIS EVENING

Upcoming tides for today are:

  • 7.85 at 11:19 a.m.
  • 1.6 at 5.44 p.m.

Luckily this isn't taking place last week when tides were much higher!

Puget Sound Marine forecast:

…SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT THIS AFTERNOON AND TONIGHT…

TODAY…VARIABLE WIND TO 10 KT BECOMING SW 15 TO 25 KT MID AFTERNOON. WIND WAVES BUILDING TO 2 TO 4 FT THIS AFTERNOON. RAIN.

Surfs up on Beach Drive! Reading the waves

Coming down off Jacobson hill last night around 5:30, I figured the wind was blowing around 40 mph by the way the waves were reacting to the wind. It's Scupper here to review how waves can tell you how hard its blowing on our neck of Puget Sound.

Flat mirror like water translates to winds at…zero

Waves just starting to crest with a cap translates to winds at…about 10mph

Sporadic white caps across the water translates to winds at…about 15mph

White caps just about everywhere translates to…about 20-25mph

Large waves with some spray blowing off the white caps translates to…25-30mph

Consistent streaks of spray & foam blown off the waves…30-40mph (what I saw coming down off the hill!)

Beyond what's described above results in denser foam/spray off the waves and indicates gale force to what the Beaufort Scales would consider "storm" conditions.

The Blustery Winds today will be Howling for the Seahawks

Just checking out the various forecasts for our area and hoping that a "tweet" from West Seattle Blog this morning regarding power flickering is just a fluke…or there's going to be some unhappy Seattle-ites with the Seahawks game starting in just a couple hours.

Let's start with the tides for today:

First Snow and Now a Flood Advisory

The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Advisorydue to the rain (100% chance of precipitation) on top of last nights snowfall until 11:30 a.m.

2011-01-12_07-38-25_668

"The rain will continue this morning and runoff will be hampered by snow still on the ground.  Areas of standing water can be expected this morning until the recent snow can melt and runoff…

Melting from recent snow along with the ongoing rain will cause ponding of water in urban areas..highways..streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage areas and low lying spots.

Do not drive  your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway.  The water depth maybe too great to allow your car to cross safely.  Move to higher ground…"

If you have drains in front of your home that are clogged with leaves, it may be a good idea to remove them to help assist the runoff on Beach Drive.

Here's the forecast for Seattle:

TODAY…RAIN OR SNOW EARLY…POSSIBLY MIXED WITH FREEZING RAIN…CHANGING TO SHOWERS. ADDITIONAL SNOW ACCUMULATIONS UP TO ONE INCH POSSIBLE. HIGHS IN THE MID 40S TO LOWER 50S. SOUTHWEST WIND 10 TO 20 MPH.
