Explosion on Beach Drive

Around 1:40 a.m. this morning, a unnamed Beach Drive neighbor says they were awoken by a powerful explosion that reverberated through his home. Our intrepid reporter, Scupper says that by the water side Mee Kwa Mooks park, a garbage can was disintegrated and the telephone pole that it was sitting next to is deeply scorched.

Scupper reports that it appears that the hoodlums were planning a party as they left behind several uncooked steaks and hot dogs at picnic table at the park. They apparently left in a hurry after the explosion.

The Seattle Fire Department arrived on the scene just after 2:00 am this morning.

Hopefully these idiots are caught.

Community invited to Lowman Beach Park seawall meeting

Seattle Parks and Recreation (SPR) invites the community to the Hall at Fauntleroy at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 31 to learn about the Lowman Beach Park seawall and provide input on design options. The Hall at Fauntleroy is located at 9131 California Ave. SW.

Lowman Beach Park is a neighborhood park on the water located just north of Lincoln Park at 7017 Beach Dr. SW. At this meeting, SPR will present the project background, analysis of the coastal processes (wind, waves, tides, sediment transport/littoral drift) and design options, as well as gather community input.

The Lowman Beach Park seawall is failing and needs to be removed or replaced. As visitors to the park have seen, the existing seawall is slowly falling over towards the water. It is SPR’s goal to remove the remaining seawall and continue the shoreline restoration work that began when the south half of the seawall failed in the mid-1990s.

We hired Environmental Science Associates (ESA) as a design consultant to undertake a feasibility study to look at options for removing the seawall, taking into consideration both the habitat benefits of the seawall removal and the coastal engineering ramifications of that seawall removal. Given the design constraints of the project, it is likely that the existing tennis court will remain in place.

I spy an Eagle eye

Early in the morning yesterday, we awoke to see a bald eagle. It’s not unusual to see them in the tall tree a few blocks away from us located at the most southerly part of Emma Schmitz View Point…however, this is the the first time we’ve seen one on a neighbor’s fence (next door to Beach Drive Bungalow aka Alki Yacht Club).
The eagle had dropped his snack (a fish) on the neighbor’s bulkhead and decided to hang around until a crow encouraged the eagle to move along.

Film Crew on Beach Drive today

Earlier today, we spied a film crew at apartments between Cormorant Cove and Constellation Park.


The infamous ever intrepid reporter Scupper discovered that the movie is a “short film”.

Car launches into a Beach Drive front yard

Just before 7:00 pm tonight, an SUV went out of control and landed in a front yard of a home on the 4700 block of Beach Drive (near Jacobsen Road).
Apparently the man driving lost consciousness and some managed to wind up on the sidewalk, narrowly missing a telephone pole, careening down the sidewalk about 20 feet, passing a parked car on the sidewalk before wiping out a fence and landing in shrubbery. You can see the front end of the car  that was passed on the sidewalk – which appears to be undamaged.

A Beach Drive neighbor who was walking on the west side of the street just saw white fence flying through the air as the accident happened.

The driver of the vehicle was seen alert and talking on his cell phone in the aid car on the way to the hospital.


It’s a miracle that no one was walking on the sidewalk on warm evening like tonight when this all happened.

High Wind Watch and Gale Warning for tomorrow

Tomorrow’s weather looks like it could be spectacular…kind of like the cherry blossoms that are just starting to bloom.

The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Watch (last updated at 11:05 am today as of the writing of this post).

...HIGH WIND WATCH IN EFFECT FROM FRIDAY MORNING THROUGH FRIDAY
EVENING...

The National Weather Service in Seattle has issued a High Wind
Watch, which is in effect from late Friday morning through early Friday
evening.

* WIND...Possible south wind 20 to 40 mph with gusts up to 60
mph.

* SOME AFFECTED LOCATIONS...Tacoma...Seattle...Everett...Port
  Townsend...Whidbey Island...The San Juan Islands...and
  Bellingham.

* TIMING...Strongest winds are most likely Friday afternoon.

* IMPACTS...Winds of this strength can break branches off of
  trees...topple weakened trees and produce power outages.

There’s black gold in them thar hills!

A local neighbor proudly shows off what his truffle snoot’n dog dug up in one of Beach Drive’s parks.


As I was on my routine dog walk (on leash w/ doo bags), a long time resident and park steward stopped me to show the latest treasure unearthed by his Golden Retriever. Apparently this isn’t the first truffle sniffed out of the woods. Rescued at 2 years old, the golden was rumored to have had truffle training before his previous owners had to give him up. Before writing this post, I was sworn to secrecy as to the exact location of the digs but guarantee to have MY dog in truffle school immediately!
