Off Leash Dog Areas in West Seattle

Orson_2A BDB Reader emailed me this afternoon wanting to know if anyone knows of attempts for petitions for off leash dog areas in Lincoln Park.

She would like to know if anyone is " has knowledge of past attempts or is interested in championing the cause"?

If anyone has any information on this, please comment on this post or email me.

Update:  We are getting some interest in a leash free zone for Lincoln Park   If you leave a comment with your email address (you’re prompted to), then others who are interested in this cause, can contact you.   If you do not want your email address on this blog, then simply send me the email and I can post your comments under my email address instead.

  1. My husband and I are in the process of buying / remodeling a house on Beach Drive on the Sound. However, we have two big wonderful black labs (our kids) and are considering backing out of the deal to do the ridiculous dog restrictions.

We would do anything possible to help petition for a off leash dog area. Please let me know what I can do to help if you find anything out.

Also, I can not seem to find out if since I am on the beach, can my dogs at least go on the beach in front of my own property – do you know?

Let me know if there is someone else you know of that may give me answers as the City seems to be stumped.

    Thanks!

    Leanne

  2. Hi, I’m very interested in this. What can I do to help? Think I shared a converstation yesterday morning on Beach Drive with the person who contacted you about this topic.

  3. My shiba inu would LOVE to see an off leash area in her favorite park! Feel free to email me for a signature if a petition is generated.

  4. Hi, I am not sure if this is still a current comment or not but I know I would be very interested in an off leash area at Lincoln Park. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help. -M

  5. Here’s a link to the city’s park’s department “off leash” page which includes a phone number: http://www.seattle.gov/parks/offleash.asp

I think Lincoln Park is perfect to have an “off leash” area and I don’t know of any parks around that offer this. It’s a great idea. My pug is happy “leashed”…if I had a “real dog” like a lab or retriever, then I would probably be campaigning with you!

If you do persue this, please keep me posted and I’ll keep promoting this cause via the blog.

  6. the no-dogs-on-the-beach laws are way to restrictive, seattlites love their dogs. at least we should be allowed to take them on the beach with LEASHES and in the less popular beaches they should be able to go off leash (owners still need to clean up after their pups). i was just down on alki and saw many more people walking dogs than people sunning themselves on the beach. i would happily sign such a petition and even give money to support the effort including supporting a candidate that pledges to make this his “pet” issue.

  7. I have a 12 year old Husky mix who has been a dog park go-er for 12 years. I firmly believe that dogs need to run off leash (even small ones).
That being said, there is a very good reason why dogs cannot be on the beach, and it is to protect wildlife (http://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=3771).

There is a great dog park IN West Seattle (there are many more in the greater Seattle area): check out Westcrest Park (http://www.seattle.gov/parks/offleash_detail.asp?id=468).

If you want to have your dog swim in the Sound, drive out of city limits and s/he can have free range. Seahurst is a good spot (http://www.ci.burien.wa.us/parksrec/other/parks/park_seahurst.htm).
